The bravery and heroism on that day from the Newfoundlanders beggars believe. If you stand at the spot where they entered the battle and see how far they had to go above ground ( their communication trench was blocked with dead and wounded ) before they even reached their trench , it's amazing any survived at all. The Germans were seen stood on their parapet waving the Newfoundlanders forward , such was the ease in shooting them down. Only the east Yorkshire regt suffered more that day I believe and stands alongside the decimation of the Pals battalions from the north of England in the grief that hit whole towns and communities.
