Well i will like to hear your thoughs about the great escape of a 800 Nez Perce from 2000 Us Soldiers.
How is posible that 800 indians mostly woman, children and old man and around 100 wariors escape from the 2000 Us soldiers, for more than three months, moving 2740 km (1400 miles),winning all the combats with the Us soldiers, but than last 60 km (less than 40 miles) before Canada they surrender.
But anyway isnt amazing how they come this far, with so little warriors, winning the battles and everything?
What do you think about this great escape?
Where they get food?
How can they move so fast with childreen and old man?
I hear they post guards behind the lines and in front the lines, they even post some messenger,scouts,...so who fight than in this four bigger battles and a lot of small ones?
Where they get amunitions?

I think it is amazing and i feel very sorry fo rthem that they didnt make it this last 40 miles to freedom.
In the movie I WILL FIGHT NO MORE FOREVER they can make it but they decide to build a camp for the night because they think they have more time(!!???)
Why they did this mistake?
Why no other indian tribe help them where they pass them by like Crow? because they look help from there.
Why Sitting Bull didnt help them with wariors because they send messenger to Sitting Bull camp that they are coming and they are very close to Canada?
I just do not understand how 2000 Us soldiers on the horse with the food in the mule didnt catch the walking childreen, woman and old man?

Ales, even though I am a cavalry fan, this is one of my all-time favorite stories. Firstly, what prompted them to try the escape were the terrible conditions of their reservation. their grievences ignored by the U.S government, they had nothing to lose. Once their escape was discovered, total arrogance on the part of the cavalry commanders involved put their troops into trap like situations ( a boxed canyon, where 40% of a troop was destroyed )..Also, Chief Joseph showed himself to be an strategist that was able to counter everything the cavalry could send at him. Some of his small battles in themselves were classic for tactics not usually in the indians bag of tricks. What ultimately caused their downfall was the lack of food. The noncombatants were severely weakened by the almost nonstop escape and pursuit by the cavalry. The army was able to get a regiment in position to cut off the Nez Perce. Joseph never realized that he was dealing with 2 separate commands and thought he had left his only pursuers behind him. His brother was killed early in the final battle and that took the heart out of Joseph. Most any book of this campaign makes for a great read, and like you, I kind of end up rooting for the Nez Perce to escape..Great questions, Ales...Michael

I live in eastern Washington which was part of the area the Nez Perce roamed. Chief Joseph is still a local hero here. It is a shame that the US government broke Joseph's tribe and merged it with unrelated tribes

Do any one know why they didnt go north if they wannt to move to Canada, because it is closer to go north than where they go?
They go east and south and than north,....
Maybe if they go north is immposible because of the big mountains or something?
