As if my Kings have not been punished enough these last several years, now I learn that they are playing at something called the Crypto.com Arena. Not the Crypto Arena which has a cool vibe but the Crypto.com Arena. What an age of suffering we live in.
Alex Ovechkin has moved into 4th place on the All-time goal scorers list with 742. As he trails Jagr by 24 goals for 3rd place, there is a real good chance he ends this season in 3rd, with only Howe and Gretzky ahead of him. Realistically, Gretzky won't be caught with 894 goals, but Howe, at 801, might be in another season or so. -- Al

Ovechkin is a prolific goal scorer but no matter how many goals he scores he will never surpass Gretzky when it comes to hockey greatness.
Gretzky is untouchable. If memory serves, Gretzky has more assists than the second place point scorer has total points, never mind adding in Gretzky's goals. -- Al

Gretzky is in a class of his own amongst all of the greats no matter what the sport.
The fact that there is no debate about him being the greatest ever says it all. The NHL has been around since 1917 and in those 104 years no one is even close to him.

Gretzky's stats are eye popping outliers. His assist numbers are unbelievable. He a decade long stretch of over 100 assists per year. One year he had 163 assists. He had over 200 points in four seasons. The only comparison might be a guy like Wilt Chamberlain who once averaged over 50 points per game in the NBA. Back when there was no three-point shot and Chamberlain was a lousy FT shooter. Four or five guys would try to guard Chamberlain back in those days with no luck.
Agreed. Chamberlain was unbelievable. Even after he became mainly a defensive stalwart later in his career, he was unstoppable when he wanted to be. The man averaged over 20 rebounds a game for his entire career. And everyone knows he scored 100 points in one game (the same year he averaged 50 ppg). What a force that man was. -- Al

Agreed, Wilt Chamberlain was an all-time great.
Now, imagine him doing everything he did on ice skates and you have the greatest of all-time in any sport, Wayne Gretzky.

One point of clarification, I am not downplaying Wilt’s achievements, I am merely saying that everything is more difficult on ice skates.

Kareem tells a story about being in an elevator with Wilt and some smart arse looks up to him as says "how is the weather up there?" Wilt spits down on him and says "it's raining." Wilt was a force of nature. Other guys have won a lot more championships but few players were as dominant in their sport as Gretzky and Wilt.

Interesting stat from the recent Pens Caps rivalry, in all of their career meetings Ovechkin has 31 goals and Crosby has 28 goals.
You would think that gap would be much larger considering how the media portrays it.
