Tom, yep that's kind of what I meant by Trench warfare, the associated slaughter during attacks which often cost thousands for very little gain. (the Americans launched an attack on the last day of the War on a German occupied town merely to get hot water for showers, this cost many lives and Pershing(??) faced an inquiry after the War - apologies if it was not Pershing but someone else)
Monty was personally very brave during WW1, wounded so badly by a bullet his grave was dug as they did not expect him to survive. At one point during a trench raid he was confronted by a German who towered over him , Monty's personal weapon had jammed, so he said he did the only thing he could....he kicked him in the ****s and took him prisoner!
