just came back from Normandy, only had 3 days there but found it an amazing place to visit. Stayed in Caen one night and then on omaha beach the next night. I was amazed at the length of the beaches, they were long and was also amazed at how quickly the tide went in and out, leaving very little beach..omaha beach looked the most formidable, after the seawall there was a near continous run of high hills, how those guys overcame the defenses must have been amazing and very costly , particularly along the northern end of the beach as the hills became like cliffs.
The remains of some of the bunkers are still in place, particulaly impressive was Point de hoq , with the artillary complex of 5 or 6 firing points in a semi circle along with the remians of the shelter bunkers for the gun crews and the ammuniation bunkers.
Also went to the american cemetry, which has the graves of 10,000 american soldiers, the cemetry itself is immaculatly tended and very sombre reminder of the scale of the lives lost on d-day and afterwards.
Didn't have time for toomany museums but really enjoyed the one on omaha beach which had a rich collection of equipment from both sides.
Also went to peagsus bridege and like rob was amazed at the accuracy of the glider piolts in landing so close to the actual bridge.
Definetly worth a visit if you get a chance and would have liked more time there. forgot to bring my camera
