The Junkers 88 was one of the Luftwaffe’s most flexible aircraft during WW2. Initially classed as a ‘fast bomber’ this twin engine aircraft went onto fulfill various other roles including; torpedo bomber, dive bomber, night fighter and towards the end of the war as the ‘Mistel’ guided flying bomb.
The Ju.88 first flew in 1936 and achieved a top speed of 360 MPH, something unheard of for a bomber in those days. Although only 12 aircraft were available to the Luftwaffe at the start of the Polish campaign by the end of the war over 16,000 had been manufactured. A crew of a Ju.88 had the distinction of being the last enemy soldiers to fight on British soil at the Battle of Graveney Marsh, when after crash landing the crew decided to remove the machine guns from the aircraft and set up a defensive position round the aircraft. The London Irish Rifles came under sustained fire from the crew but were eventually encouraged to surrender when faced with insurmountable odds.
This new version of the Ju.88 flew with 1KG in the Sicily area and was prevalent in operating against Allied forces particularly shipping during the Anzio landings. Although not readily apparent from the photographs, the whole upper area is camouflaged with a Wellenmuster squiggle pattern over the sand and blue main frame colour scheme.
Our model also comes loaded down with two torpedoes and must have been a terrifying sight for Allied sailors once she had been spotted and then headed in their direction.
We only have two 1/32 scale models available priced at $950 plus postage, the figures and accessories are shown for scale comparison purposes only.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a twin engined aircraft developed for an Army Air Corps requirement for a heavy fighter. The P-38 had a distinctive shape with twin booms and a central nacelle containing the pilot and armament. Reputedly the Germans nicknamed the aircraft the fork tailed devil and the Japanese called it the ‘two planes, one pilot’ fighter. The P-38 was used as an interceptor, bomber, ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft, it was used most successfully in the Pacific theatre.
Its most noteworthy role was where it was used to ambush Admiral Yamamoto who was flying in a Mitsubishi Betty bomber on a morale boosting tour. Unbeknown to him the Japanese codes had been partially broken and the USA were aware of his movements. Yamamoto’s aircraft was shot down with Yamamoto being killed by 2 wounds during the air strike. His body was thrown clear of the wreck and he was found the next day sitting upright in his chair underneath a tree as if asleep.
The Lightning’s greatest strengths were long range, high speed, fast climb and concentrated firepower, it was a formidable aeroplane and the only one to see service for the entire length of the US involvement during WW2. Our latest and most likely last P-38 'Mamas Boy' was flown by Lt Ed Wasil, a flight leader with the 55th fighter squadron (The Loco Busters) based in the UK.
Our 1/30 scale model is limited to 3, price is $750 plus postage depending on location.
The Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star was the first jet fighter used operationally by the USAAF during WW2. Designed and built by Lockheed in 1943 and delivered just 143 days from the start of design, production models were flying, and two pre-production models did see very limited service in Italy just before the end of WW2. Designed with straight wings, the type saw extensive combat in Korea with the USAAF as the F-80.
The P-80 was America's first successful turbojet powered combat aircraft, it was soon outclassed with the appearance of the swept-wing MiG-15 and was quickly replaced in the air superiority role by the transonic F-86 Sabre. The F-94 Starfire an all-weather interceptor using the same airframe, also saw Korean War service. The closely related T-33 Shooting Star trainer remained in service with the U.S. Air Force and Navy well into the 1980s, with the last NT-33 variant not retired until April 1997.
The Shooting Star had a maximum speed of 594 mph and was armed with 6 x machine guns, it could also carry 8 x rockets or 2 x 450 kg bombs. Our 1/30 scale model 'Evil Eye Fleagle' is one of the most colourful Shooting Stars of the Korean war, as such we had two models which were made for individual Gunn customers, these have now been sold. We have another three models on order, if one appeals to you please let us know at your earliest convenience and it can even be painted in colours of your choice if so desired. The price is $699 per model plus postage.
The TG/K&C figures and accessories are shown for display purposes only and are not included.
WOW225 Hawker Seafury
The Hawker Sea Fury was a British fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Hawker Aircraft. It was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy, and one of the fastest production single reciprocating engine aircraft ever built. Developed during the Second World War, the Sea Fury entered service two years after the war ended. It proved to be a popular aircraft with a number of overseas militaries, and was used during the Korean War in the early 1950s, as well as against the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba.
The Sea Fury’s development was formally initiated in 1943 in response to a wartime requirement of the RAF, thus the aircraft was initially named Fury. As the Second World War drew to a close, the RAF cancelled their order for the aircraft; however, the Royal Navy saw the type as a suitable carrier aircraft to replace a range of increasingly obsolete or poorly suited aircraft being operated by the Fleet Air Arm. Development of the Sea Fury proceeded, and the type began entering operational service in 1947.
The Sea Fury has many design similarities to Hawker’s preceding Tempest fighter, having originated from a requirement for a “Light Tempest Fighter”; both the Sea Fury’s wings and fuselage originate from the Tempest but were significantly modified. Production Sea Furies were fitted with the powerful Bristol Centaurus aircraft, the definitive Sea Fury FB 11 was a fighter-bomber, the design having been found suitable for this mission as well.
The Sea Fury attracted international orders as both a carrier and land-based aircraft; it was operated by countries including Australia, Burma, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, West Germany, Iraq, and Pakistan. The type acquitted itself well in the Korean War, fighting effectively even against the MiG-15 jet fighter.
In 1952, the first Chinese MiG-15 jet fighters appeared in Korea. On 8 August 1952, Lieutenant Peter “Hoagy” Carmichael, of 802 Squadron, flying Sea Fury WJ232 from HMS Ocean, was credited with shooting down a MiG-15 down, making him one of only a few pilots of a propeller-driven aircraft to shoot down a jet. The engagement occurred when a formation of Sea Furies and Fireflies was engaged by eight MiG-15s, during which one Firefly was badly damaged while the Sea Furies escaped unharmed. Some sources claim that this is the only successful engagement by a British pilot in a British aircraft during the Korean War, although a few sources claim a second MiG was downed or damaged in the same action. In addition, the recollections of Sub-Lieutenant Brian “Schmoo” Ellis, who flew on this operation, differ from the official version of events and it is he who claimed the kill.
A while back we made a batch of Seafuries which quickly sold out. We felt the TG showroom would look better for one of these beauties showcasing it and we have therefore created two more, one for us and one for a lucky customer, if you are as attracted to this iconic post war aircraft as we are then please drop us a line and reserve at your earliest convenience.
Our 1/32 scale model represents the model flown by Lt Carmichael during that very famous encounter with the MIG-15.
