Today is the 64th anniversary of The Shot Heard Around the World, Bobby Thomson's game winning HR that gave the NY Giants a 5-4 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers and the National League Pennant.

It is the greatest moment in baseball history, if not all of sports.

The Giants were 13 games behind the Dodgers in August of that year but came back to force a 3 game playoff. Each team won a game apiece and the Dodgers were leading 4-2 when that fateful bottom of the 9th inning began.

I don't think Ralph Branca remembers it quite so fondly.{eek3} -- Al

Anyone remember the M*A*S*H* episode with this game in the story line?? it was hilarious as Hawkeye knew the final score (due to suggested time zone) and won a bunch of bets from the other guys, great game, and TV show...Sammy

No, but he does recognize it as a great moment in history and he and Bobby became great friends and did a lot of events together. Ralph has a famous son in law: Bobby V, the pride of Stamford, Connecticut.

I am sure it was a great moment but I think it might be a bit of a stretch to say greatest moment in world sport. Just because American baseball has the World Series does not mean it rates in the rest of the world where World sporting events tend to involve multiple countries.

However since Brad raised subject of sporting moments how about for the Australians Cathy Freemans
400m in Sydney Olympics and for the British the 1966 World Cup win v Germany in London.

Don't remember the year but what about the famous ice hockey game where USA beat the Russians ?

For USA fans please note the World Series of Rugby League is later today with Brisbane Broncos playing the North Queensland Cowboys which is a win for Queensland either way !
