Today here in Australia whilst we do remember Operation Overlord the D-Day Landings at Normandy, we also commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Operation Overlord in Vietnam starting on 6th June, 1971. This was a combined U.S. and Australian operation which included the Battle of Long Khanh,
The Operation was named after the Normandy invasion and had six Areas Of Operation codenamed Juno, Sword, Utah, Gold Omaha and Orne. It was only fitting that the AO Omaha was allocated to the 2/8th Battalion 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) supported by C Battery 5th Battalion 42rd Artillery Regiment (155mm Guns) located at Fire Base Cherrie.
Australian Forces involved were the 3 RAR, 4 RAR/NZ, A Sqn 3rd Cavalry Regt (M113), C Sqn 1st Armoured Regt (Centurions), supported by 104 Field Battery RA (105mm guns) and 'A' Field Battery RA located at Fire Bases Pamela and Trish. This was one of the few Brigade size operations carried out by 1st Australian Task Force.
The Battle of Long Khanh lasted for over eight hours involving 3rd Battalion RAR and Centurion tanks of 'C' Squadron. Enemy forces involved were 3rd Bn 33rd NVA Regiment and D445 VC Battalion. Two bunkers systems and training camps were destroyed. The first system consisted of 47 Bunkers and the second of 31 Bunkers.
Operation Overlord ceased on 14th June after a very successful eight days. So it is only fitting on this day that we remember those who fought and died in the Battle of Long Khanh as part of Operation Overlord.
LEST WE FORGET.
