11/8/1942 - American and British forces landed in North Africa and engaged French forces loyal to the Vichy government.

The USS Massachusetts became the first of the "fast battleships" to engage an enemy ship. The enganged the incomplete French battleship Jean Bart and silenced her operational gun turret. The French sailors made repairs and later opened fire again. The Massachusetts returned and put Jean Bart out of action again. This was five days before the 2nd Naval Battle of Guadalcanal where the USS Washington turned a near defeat into victory.
