Halkett's Orderly Book --- fun read. And earlier enteries illustrate the discipline and apparent prevalence for lashing!!! Not the 40 lashes from an Erroyl Flynn movie, but 100's at a time for an infraction. Daily parades !!!

For the Genls guard tomorrow the 44th

The field officer and detacht of 100 men that joined the advance party at Monacutha's Camp to be releived this evening and to parade at the front gun. Field officer for the detacht Lieut. Col. Gage. The troops to receive immediatly two days meat & two days flower which compleats them with provisions to the tenth inclusive. All the men by those who mount the picquet this night to draw their peices and to load with fresh cartridges tomorrow at Genl beating and the commandg officers will be answerable to the Genl for any firing without application. The company of Grends. of the 44th & 48th regts to parade tomorrow morning at two oClock at the head of their respective collours and to march from thence to the advance party and there put themselves under the command of Lt. Col. Gage, The men are to be compleat with 24 rounds of powder & ball and are to take their napsacks & haversacks but are to leave their tents behind. The grends to march compleat with Offrs & 70 rank & file. The officers not to take their baggage but to leave it in charge with the Qr Masters of their respective regt. The Genl to beat tomorrow morning at 4 oClock the assembly at 5 and the troops to march immediatly after.

Camp 6 miles of this side Guests, July 12th 1755

The troops to parade this evening at retreat beating at the head of their respective regts & companys with their arms & accouterments. The surgons of the line to get their several sick 7 wounded men put into waggons this afternoon. They are to apply to Mr. Scott waggon master genl. for waggons that the men are to go in, and to conform to the orders of this morning relative to ye men going in them. The Genl to beat tomorrow morning at 4 oClock, the assembly at 5 when the troops are to march. The officers fitt for duty to parade this evening with their men.

Field officer for this night Major Sparks

One Capt, 2 Subs, 2 Serjts, 2 Corpls & 60 men of the line to parade immediatly & receive their orders from Col, Dunbar. They are to go to the Meddows as a grass gd. The commanding officers of each company to give in immediatly a return of the effective Serjts, Corpls & Privet men fitt for duty now in camp & likewise of the officers. This return to be given in to the Brighade Major. The retreat beating, all the picquets to stand to their arms. They are to advance one third from each other as out centrys and see they are posted properly. The officers of each picquet is by turns to go their rounds from 9 oClock till Genl beating every two hours. On the drums call for beating the Genl all picquets are to stand their arms and the out centrys are to look out sharp and are to remain untill a long roll beats and then they are to join their respective picquets. When the long roll beats all the tents are to be struck and immediatly loaded & repair to the front of the line where they are to march constantly and all the women are to march constantly in the rear with the provost. Any battman or woman disobaying this order will be severaly punished. Capt. Cristy of Col. Dunbars regt. is appointed to act as Qr. Master Genl. to this army the quarter master genl being indisposed. The Genl to beat tomorrow morning at 5 oClock. The line is to march 4 deep. The officers & Serjts are to see they march regulery. The officers are desired to keep constantly to their posts and at all times to march on the flanks. One Capt, 2 Subs & 60 men to take the advance guard, and one Sub with one Serjt. & 20 men to make the rear guard. The advance guard to advance 1 Serjt & 12 men to help 60 guards advance of him. 2 Serjts with 12 men of each flank
 
Ken...I read that a couple of months ago...it was brutal....
all work details....
no food of sustenance...
except for the officers....
and severe punishment.

Morning Orders.

James Anderson of Col: Dunbars regt: who was Tryd at the Genl: Court Martial is ordered "ONE THOUSAND LASHES" whith a cat of nine tails which he is to receive in sunch manner as the commanding Offr: of the Regt shall think proper.
Field officer for tomorrow Major Chapman. The two regt. to be mustered tomorrow morning at 7 oClock. But the Genl: will not revew them till further orders.
