Just watched the first ep of this that featured the battle around Nimy Bridge, Mons where the 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers held off the Germans for many ours losing many men and inflicting heavy losses on the German. It earned the first two VC's of the War for Lt Dease and Private Godley for their heroic manning of the machine gun at the bridge that helped hold the Germans and allow their comrades to withdraw.

This was an excellent drama that took you into the action at the bridge with very good effects that were akin to Saving Private Ryan. Camera's on rifles and runners alike gave it an unusual look at times which some may like and others not. However overall we really enjoyed it, I say we because my good lady wanted to watch it too as we have visited the bridge ourselves.

It's a three ep series and I think next week is the Somme.

Here's prog home page, the series can be watched on the BBC iplayer

Watched this also on Thursday night. A very good effort by the BBC. Battle scenes excellent and imaginatively filmed.

Having said that, I do have reservations on a couple of very misleading " Bullet Point" statements used in the programme.

Yes even the good old BBC won't get everything right all the time, but I really enjoyed this , so far the Beeb's WW1 season is good stuff, with four years to go!
