Has anyone seen this yet? I started watching it last night, I binge watched it until 3:00am this morning.

It's the story of a high school football player in Texas who is accused of molesting two young boys, won't say anymore about it other than it is IMO THE most compelling program I have seen in a long time.

This program confirms what I already know; our criminal justice system between "a jury of your peers", corrupt Cops and DA's along with incompetent lawyers is disgraceful.

What happened to this kid could happen to anyones son.

It sickens and disgusts me.....................................

George...thanks...looking for something to watch...I'll check it out...I'm getting tired of Gunsmoke's "The Bestus of Festus"...^&grin

Mike,
You're probably familiar with this as it made big news in Texas.........................it's a five part series, one hour each part, once you start watching it, like a good book, you won't be able to put it down/stop watching.

I went from boiling mad to tears, a whole range of emotions, there were three people in this documentary that everytime I saw his/her face, my blood would boil, let's compare notes afterward and see if you agree with me or not..................

Watched the first episode but will have to finish next 4 over the week end.

The gym guy, ex US Air Force, saying the football player had claimed to be a US Marine who had served in Afghanistan was weird. He did have the "look" of a Marine and perhaps gym guy being Air Force more easily fooled but hard to think a 19 year old could convincingly pass as having served in Afghanistan when he had not. However prosecution used to show him as a liar. I have my doubts whether such evidence could be used in an Australian case.

Sucked me in anyway.

Glad you like it.

It gets a lot better/compelling, trust me on that.

If nothing else, this documentary shows how flawed our system can be.

Got young kids. Is this going to f*** me up, or is it an important cautionary tale?

Larry,
They don't dwell too much on the actual crime itself, it's more a tale of how flawed our judicial system is from police detectives/chiefs to DA's to lawyers to the concept of 12 nitwits who have no clue about how the law actually works and the term "BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT"....................

The range of emotions I felt was off the charts, there were two people, one in particular, that whenever they were shown on the screen, I wanted to punch them in the face.

Everything that could have possibly went wrong did go wrong for this kid.

Just infuriating.

As someone who was once accused of a crime I did not commit, I totally felt for that kid.

yea...

that would be....

his original attorney...
the chief of police...who retired a while back...
the head investigator...who recently resigned...
the DA...
her 2 prosecutors...
the Texas ranger...

just to name a few...

that's what you call "being railroaded"...

thanks George...

good watch!

Great recommendation George:salute::

As you say a lot of punchable people in this story. Incredible how much was against him including his own lawyer. She was as two faced as they come yet seems to have played on the hurt of him being convicted whilst innocent to further her career. Not only a conflict of interest taking his case but did not try very hard.

The "investigation" was beyond a joke and it is staggering the Detective continued as a Detective.

However special mention to his lawyer, the girlfriend and the guy who did not know him but rallied his support.

Town council pathetic.

The Texas Ranger guy looked cool in his hat but even he proved to be a disappointment. Another two faced participant in this sorry story. I Googled him and interesting to note he has even visited Queensland to discuss child cases.

The case shows the problem where prosecution want to believe the victim of a sexual abuse case but lose all sight of the lack of supporting evidence. Compounded in this case by the fact there was another likely suspect right in front of them. That he could be convicted on such poor evidence is mind blowing. The one thing he was lucky with was the integrity of the new DA.

Compelling viewing.

Glad you enjoyed it.

That chief was a piece of work, he had a smirk on his face the whole time.

What about that girl who's an advocate for children; she was convinced the kid did it, it blew my mind when the interviewer said "What about this new evidence, if he's released, do you still think he did it?" and her reply was "Yes, I believe the children in this case"....................

So she takes the word of a four year old, one of whom was pressured into his testimony and was basically scared ****less the whole time. Loved how that detective said "How many times did he touch you, ONE or TWO"......ie, not yes or no, but how many times, whatever answer he gives is bad.

Brett,
So many great thoughts expressed here.

Imagine his first lawyer with her conflict, she was a family friend of the kid who IMO did the crime, yet she broomed him under the rug as a possible suspect, and she still took the case, anyone with an ounce of integrity wouldn't have taken the case, AND, she now has an important job in Philadelphia? Really?

And yes, that investigation was a joke; did not visit the house, did not collect evidence, did not focus on ANY other suspect, fudged a police report, pressured a second child to come forward, on and on it goes.

And that detective is now a sergeant in charge of 10 other detectives? Are you kidding me? Loved when the kids new lawyer asked him on the stand "What is the goal of a police investigation?" and his reply was "To get a conviction".................the moans and gasps in the courtroom over that, to which the lawyer replied "Isn't the goal to find the TRUTH?"...........tremendous right there, made that detective look like a total horses ***.

And that town council; typical empty suit politicians, all they wanted was to collect their paychecks and not actually do anything, that was awesome when the kids mother ripped them all a new one, they are all gutless.

I don't get that Texas Ranger at all; he was 100% in the kids corner, then he turned on him and what was all that nonsense about he was on some adult meeting site with four user names, none of which were on record with the company? Why did he turn on that kid? Pressure from above to do so?

VERY confusing that was, I couldn't wrap my head around it.

The new DA was my hero, he corrected a wrong and fully supported that kid.

Amazing the appeals court voted NINE to zero to free him.................what does that tell you?

And the judge ripping his former lawyer a new one was great too, she basically accused her of being a piss poor excuse for a lawyer, which she was in truth.

All that kid got was 320,000 for having his dream of playing in the NFL ruined and four years of his life stolen from him, not to mention what he must have gone through in prison, you and I both know how inmates feel about convicts accused of crimes against children.

He's lucky they did not kill him in jail.

Glad you thought it was worth a watch.

George,
Another point was the home / childcare premises had three of the kids of the owner operator who had been charged and defended by the one lawyer. That does not include the other brother who was actually named by the Detective when questioning the child. Yet there was nothing of interest to make the Detective go there !. Not even a record check on the people at the premises ?

I looked at the Cedar Park PD web page. A Dept of 97 sworn officers ! Pop. in area around 70,000. I think one of the problems in USA is too many PD's, County Sherrif's, City / State Police etc. About 18,000 ! Such small PD's cant have the resources to investigate some major or complicated cases. If the Detective visited that premises it looks like about 7 other people to question. So he did not bother and pretty much relied on the kids evidence.

If you found that case interesting check out, on Wikipedia, Operation Midland (a major scandal in the UK involving allegations, including murders, against a former PM, former Chief of Defence and other senior politicians by one person who was believed). The complainant subsequently went to jail for 18 years over his false allegations. Another fascinating case was the Cardinal Pell case down here (involving allegations by one boy, 20 years later, about events after Pell conducted his first mass in a Cathedral). Convicted despite many witnesses at the Mass saying simply could not have happened as described. Lost first State appeal (2-1) but won final Supreme court appeal (7-0). Probably been some documentaries already on Midland. Not aware of any documentary on Pell so far but the case split the country and for many it did not even matter that he may not have been guilty. People actually thought he should accept his fate even if not guilty so as to take the fall for Catholic abuse in general. In both cases the Police were convinced but investigations were a disgrace. Nothing happened to any of the police despite serious criticism.
