Saw this yesterday. Not high on my list to see but my better half made the decision for me.
Directed by Michael Bay and he, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) did not take an upfront fee but chose to take a percentage of profits. Budget only US$26 million and apparently not been that well received in the USA although made over $60 million so far.
A crime-comedy and based on a story published in a 1999 series of Miami New Times articles written by Pete Collins and compiled in Collins' 2013 book Pain & Gain: This is a True Story, which details the kidnapping, extortion, torture, and murder of several victims by an organized group of criminals that included a number of bodybuilders affiliated with Sun Gym in early 90's.
Although based on a true story the comedy element and the main characters makes you side with them initially. However things then start getting serious and gory so you go from laughter to "Uh Oh" quite quickly and then back to laughing.
A few of the characters have the same names as some of the real life culprits and at the end of the movie their real images and details appear. Had not heard of the original case so looked it up and an interesting case to say the least (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_&_Gain ). The Wiki entry goes into the differences between the movie and real case and there is an interesting side to story in real life to what later happened to one of the victims.
I thought it was quite good and judging by the laughter coming from the seat next to me it got a high rating from my wife.
Some interesting supporting actors :
Ed Harris as a retired cop.
Tony Shaloub (Monk) as a victim (one of the most unlikable victims you will see).
Rebel Wilson, Aussie actress who is doing quite well in USA now.
Israeli model Bar Paly
Ken Jeong from The Hangover movies as a motivational speaker
Other main lead was Anthony Mackie although was not really known to me but was in the Hurt Locker and Gangster Squad.
If you like comedy with chain saws and yucky BBQ's then you might enjoy it.
