Hi all,
New member and first time poster but have followed the forum for some time now. I have collected plastic figures for many years starting like a lot of people with Airfix as a kid but now have a wide range of manufacturers including Conte, TSSD, Barzo, AIP, Accurate, Britains, Deetail, Imex and others.
Deciding to try my hand at painting some of them but was really unsure where/how to start. So, for better or worse, I picked up a set of Airfix British Infantry multipose which came with some paints and guide. Anyway, apart from the skin, weapons, and boots everything else appears to painted the basic uniform colour. Whilst I am only beginning, I would like to try and have a go at distinguishing the webbing, pouches, and gaiters from the rest of the uniform and wondered if anyone could point me at a couple of other colours or guides I might use. Was thinking maybe Valejo paints. Wanting to keep it basic as just starting out paintngi but would like a bit of variation to the colours so any help/thoughts appreciated.

Hi Murph,

That kit is a good place to start. I use Vallejo and have painted British WW1 and WW2 figures. Vallejo 70.921 English uniform is a good colour to start with for British khaki uniforms. Vallejo can be thinned with a bit of water to flow off the brush a bit easier and is easy to add light or dark colours to if you wish highlight the paint a bit. I wouldn't get too carried away at first. Get some good brushes, not too small (a size one is about the smallest I use), assemble them well, clean them up and prime them and off you go. Just try to get the paint on neatly.

I received an e-mail from Tommy's War fogures yesterday which has a painting guide (including paint numbers for Vallejo) and some good advice that is relevant to your subject matter-

A couple of points he makes in the booklet- English khaki was not a uniform colour and enjoy your painting.

Try this on youtube
"painting toy soldiers"

But basic,
Clean all mouldinglines if need be
wash the unmouted figurines with soapy water
rince with clear water
drying
assemble and glue
undercoat them in white with a can spray like Tamya
drying 24H
Then begin to paint

And .............. Enjoy

I will also say any rubbery plastic figs you paint like conte germans, airborne, vikings, or other figs like that 99 percent of the time no matter what you do for prep or what kind of paint you use if you bend their weapons it will flake off dont get discouraged by it its usually just the weapons
