Painting Plains Indians-a question. (1 Viewer)

Hello folks,
Just curious as to what color or colors some of you use for painting the skin tones on Plains Indians. I tend to go with Vallijo or craft store acrylics like Ceremcoat, Apple Barrel, etc. Any tips? Thanks in advance. (I'll be putting brush to 54mm plastics if it makes any difference).

Here is a link to an article about Ethnic Skintones. You may not be painting quite so many different highlights and shades, but you can pick one of the midtones from which to start.

this is a good question that you have posted, and should provide some valauable feedback for those of us who paint our own figures.

I tend to paint my figures without mixing colours, I use the closest match and thats because if I'm wanting to add more figures in a similar group, I want the colours to match. It has happened when I've painted some figures for someone, and then a year of two later, they more of the same and I'd not be able to match the mixture.

I always use Humbrol Enamels, both for gloss and matt, but will apply a top coat of matt spray or gloss brush on to achive the final finish.

For Plains Indians I use GLoss Tan, as it gives reasonable looking colour.

For Sub-continent Indians I'll use a Service Brown for southern Indians and Khaki for lighter skins.

For Asiatic they will have similar Light Khaki colour, tending lighter the futrher noth they originate from.

European skin tone is always Humbrol Flesh.

I'm only painting this type of colour to indicate a general racial colour, and with all nationalities, it varies widly. I even vary the hair colour in some sets, particualry when I paint Scotsmen, as I love to have some red-heads in the band !!!
Souther Europeans will have black hair, while other Europeans will have varieties of brown.

I use a lot of craft type acrylic paint and Citadel acrylic paint (Warhammer). Citadel makes a "Tanned Flesh" that works very good for Indians .. you can mix in some browns for darker tones... and add a dab of white to lighten for highlights..

I use Vallejo myself have not painted any plains indian's i guess i would go for tan or Brown.
On skintones i prefer to go darker on most troops spend a few days out in the field and you soon look gruby....plus black smoke blowing across the field.
faces and hands get tanned from the sun.

Am considering attempting a few Pegaso and Andrea kits in this area myself as of late, and would love to see any painted Native American figures any of you have done or will do in the future. I suspect I may be asking for more advice once I've actually gotten to paint and brushes.

Andrea are very nice kits have done a couple in the past.
the TSSD Indians look like fun to paint might grab a bag of them at some stage.

I use tanned skin from citadel paints. I also use it on Afrika Corp Germans. I painted a set of Airfix plains indians a year or so ago. I posted on this site. You may could go back and find the old post and look if it would help
