World War I was a global war and one of the theaters of that war was the Middle East. The British who had a long standing colonial interest in the region made it part of their strategy to protect Middle Eastern oil supplies which were needed by the Royal Navy. In this conflict Britain was pitted against the Turkish forces of the Ottoman Empire and their German allies. Below is a contemporary photograph of some of the British soldiers involved in the Middle Eastern Campaign. Note especially the figure in the back row of the photograph who is wearing a tropical helmet and the army blue-grey collarless shirt typical of uniforms in that theater of the war. Below the photograph are 2 illustrations from the Osprey Men-At-Arms volume THE BRITISH ARMY 1914-1918, showing the tropical helmet and blue-grey shirt worn with khaki shorts. In the second frame of this thread is my diorama commemorating this lesser known part of WWI
