I want to recommend 4 titles by Paul Carell that I have resd and found extremely well done and useful. They are all old titles that many of you will know but maybe some new to the field readers will appreciate. On North Afrika, "The Foxes Of The Desert" done by Dutton in 1961. Still around in HB & SC. Normandy, "Invasion, They're Coming!" done by Dutton in 1963, also still around. Russian front, "Hitler Moves East 1941-1943" done by Little-Brown in 1965 and "Scorched Earth: The Russian-German War 1943-1944" done by Little-Brown in 1966. These last 2 are hard to find at reasonable prices but are very important studies. Raid a library. All these titles are well worth your time and all are written from the German viewpoint. -- lancer

I haven't read any of the titles but I know that Foxes of the Desert has received high marks from historians in the field and it's one I hope to read in the not too distant future.

I have his book Hitler Moves East. The book is one of my favorites and I read it twice. Excellent history of the Eastern Front. I also have the Invasion book in paperback. Another favorite. Leadmen

I've been thinking about purchasing his book on the battle of Stalingrad.
What would your thoughts on this book be if any.
Thanks.

ExRanger - I have not read Carell's book on Stalingrad but it's reputation amongst some EastFront fans and bookdealers I know was that it was worth having. Carell has a very readable writing style and the book is done from the German viewpoint. Also consider Craig's "Enemy At The Gates", and Beavors "Stalingrad" which I have read and found both very good. -- lancer

Don't get the Stalingrad book.

It's only a reprint of the Stalingrad chapters from "Hitler Moves East".

On the topic of Carell's "Stalingrad", I agree that buying it is redundant if you have "Hitler Moves East". However, if one is looking to buy HME then be prepared to pay a lot of money. "Stalingrad" will be a cheaper alternative if all you want is the Stalingrad campaign. JMHO. -- lancer
