I got this email from Photobucket today...
I have not used this account in 3 years...
have not even logged on in 3 years...
they sound really desperate for cash...

Effective today, your account has been restricted due the fact that you are exceeding the free storage limit of 2.5GB (approximately 250 images). For your reference, you are currently using 5GB of image storage. This means that you are no longer able to add photos to your account and must either delete or download images to meet the free plan limit..

What You Must Do
For either $4.48 (monthly option) or $48.38 (discounted annual option), you will get 25GB of storage (room for approximately 2,500 images), plus watermark free image hosting, use of our new state of the art image editor, among other features.

Yes, a scam. I gave up on them years ago. One of many. Sometimes I get incoming phone calls that I don't recognize and want to check the telephone number. Phone numbers are largely in the public sphere of information unless they are unlisted or blocked. But try looking one up on the Internet sometime. They direct you to these "free" lookup services where after requesting your life history they want payment. The age we live in.

It's not a scam, in the strict sense of the word. A scam would be someone representing himself as the merchant and trying to swindle money from unsuspecting victims. Photobucket has bounced backed from its disastrous decision back in 2017 to eliminate its free hosting accounts, and replace them with free storage and a paid hosting account costing $499 a year. As you all may recall, Photobucket abruptly stopped answering hosting calls, that is, where you had embedded a link in a web post, and someone landed on that page, Photobucket no longer responded to the link by showing the image. That caused a lot of confusion and irritation among Photobucket users.

They walked that back; they still don't have a free hosting account, but they now offer a scale of paid hosting accounts, with increasing levels of storage available.

I know that throughout 2017 and 2018, if I tried to access my Photobucket account, I couldn't even see the files. I was presented with a page requiring me to choose one of the new accounts, again, of which only the $499 account offered hosting as opposed to storage. Only towards the end of 2018 could I once again access my account and see the images, but I still couldn't download them successfully, without taking a new account.

I don't know of anyone who went back to Photobucket, after that fiasco. I switched to Postimage, myself, which has its own issues but is still free.

So, it's not a scam, just a clumsy attempt by a merchant to try to retain or salvage an existing customer.

Prost!

Brad...
agreed...
their first attempt at holding their free patrons pictures hostage...
seemed to have really back fired on them...
these rates are a little better...
but like you...
I scavenged what I wanted and left the account idle...

I thought the bonus watermark free image hosting perk...
seemed a silly offer...
who want's "Photobucket" watermarked on their pictures?
answer...
nobody!

If I were the CEO of Photobucket, I'd have fired whatever marketing genius came up with that idea. It's as stupid an idea as canceling "Firefly" was for Fox.

Prost!
Brad
