I just saw this item in my local newspaper, and thought I would post it here as an article of interest:

http://www.mcall.com/business/local/all-recalls_1208.6698821dec08,0,2266182.story

The figured are marketed by a company called OKK Trading but made in-surprise, surpise-the People's Republic of China. They are 7.5-inch tall figures, sold in dollar stores, so no one here is too likely to have bought them, but the story is of interest to our broader hobby, I think.

Here is a link to OKK Trading's recall notice, too:

I apologize for th quality of writing in our local paper, by the way, "...plastic toy Army figures that are dressed in Army fatigues..." As opposed to Army figures dressed in Marine dress blues? Our schools have been slipping....

These are sadest toys I've seen in a while. I have a friend who has a toy shop and refers to these as "shut-up toys", the kind you get in desperation to quiet a child who HAS to have something.

lol

I haven't seen these myself, but I did see that the local Dollar Tree has bags of "army men" like we played with as kids. I've been tempted to get a bag and paint them, just to see how they look finished.

Prosit!

One Bright spot is that you can find small bags of the horrible BMC figures at the "Shut-Up Toy" section in drug stores. Give the figures to the neighbor kids and keep the artillery Limbers which are now moulded in the "correct" Union Army OD green. Get some spare wheels from the craft shop, Micheal's, and replace those flimsy buggy wheels and you have a limber that fits in with better artillery models, w/o painting. Soak the limbers in hot water first to straighten the limber pole. The old wheels slip right off.

Hi Scott
over here the drug store is known as the Chemist but you are lucky as I have never known a chemist shop iin Britain to sell soldiers/figures painted or otherwise, only cough medicine, skin cream and family planning products! .

We have chains of stores such as "Rite Aid" that have some groceries, greeting cards, "seaonal items" a photo developer, and magazines. It's "One Stop Shopping" for those that forgot things.

Well, to that point, let me quote Granny from "The Beverly Hillbillies", on the subject of modern druggist's/chemist's shops:

"That's not a drug store, it's a what-not shop!"

Scott's quite right about the chain drugstores here in the States, they really have become convenience stores, that happen to have pharmacies attached (though I remember, when I was a kid, the local drugstore did sell cheap toys, too).

Prost!

Ours has these also and just recetly I notced a like cowboy set with a couple of figures, barrels and a Saloon facade. Kind of cheap looking but I bet a lick of paint and a few decals to the facade would make it look alright.

Hi thanks for the info -the way our shops and businesses are collapsing over here in the last 3 months as the economic downturn bites, there wont be a high sreet left soon with any shops at all!!!!! Today Woolworths had a closing down sale after 99 years in the UK, an institution soon to be no more unless there is a last minute buyer - I have fond memories of buying Timpo swoppits in the mid to late 1970's at my local store - the world is changing!
