Yesterday we had a spammer sending PM's to members under the user name "Jessie." I banned the user and zapped all the private messages he sent so if you received an email notification that you had a message and can't find one in your PM inbox that is why. I believe he was going methodically through the member list and only a few people at the beginning of the list got messages before I caught wind of it.
One member who received the email notification but couldn't find a PM to match it was concerned that someone was phishing (sending out bogus emails in hopes of tricking the recipient into giving out personal information such as passwords or bank account info) using a forum PM notification look-alike as bait, but this is not the case.
If you receive vague PMs such as "Hi, I'm new here. What's up?" especially with some quote about Buddhism (the two times this has happened on our forum both spammers used the same quote) do not reply but instead notify the administrator or any moderator and we will deal with it.
