Dear Fellow Forum Members,
Today (2/18/07) is Chinese New Year, Year of the Pig, Lunar Year 4705. My family and I wish everyone good health and a prosperous new year. Gung Hay Fat Choy!!!:)

Happy New Year Steven. What is the basis for the year 4705? As you well know the West uses BC and AD to recognize yearly time. What does the Chinese calander use as its begining date?

Tradition holds that the calendar was invented by Emperior Huang Di in the 61st year of his reign in 2637 BCE. The beginning date was set as the date of the first full moon of the new year of the first year of his reign.:)

Thanks Steven.

I find time to be an interesting subject. From Einstein’s proof of the measured speed of light and how time slows down as you approach the speed of light to how we calculate the passing of a year. In the West it’s by a religious event and now I learn from Steven that the Chinese use a significant moment in time for one particular emperor.

I remember Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles and reading in wonder as Bradbury described colonists who settled on Mars. A very comprehensive series of science fiction writing that is now a classic of literature. In one of the books, Bradbury tells of how a man sees images (ghosts) of the Martians that existed an unknown period of time in the past. The man and the images were able to communicate and one of the ancestors was trying to work with the man and determine the time relationship between their societies. Each society measured time differently and the only thing that the man knew was that the Martians existed a very, very long time ago.

Much military history is determined by time. Time to determine a location on the planet. Time to plan for movement. Time to plan preparations. Time to be the firstest with the mostest.

Steven:

Oh I'm not so sure of that. I heard it was invented by Julie Ceasar right

after he invented Coca Cola, Pizza, The Sopranos, and the Moon.

Njja:D

Ah yes Steven:

My feeble attempt at humor.....implying that perhaps Rome was at one

time the center of the universe.

Prosperous New Year to Steven, Rick, Larry Lo, and any other forum member who celebrates this holiday.
