Question for our experts.....Can JJD Leuthen Prussian Grenadiers be modified to represent Hessians of the American Revolution?

I think that with the right coloring and taking note of the cuffs, buttons and lapels, it could be possible.

The JJD Prussians are II Garde of Leibgarde and have Swedish cuffs with 2 lots lace as well as 6 sets of lace on the lapels and sculpted on the right shoulder is a white aiguillette which Hessians wouldn't have.

You will have to decide which Hessian regiment you want to depict, then analyse that uniform before deciding on a conversion.

I have a few sets of Hessians in my collection, but mostly glossy:

hess_g.jpg
Hessen-Kassel Grenadier Regiment ' v. Rahl '

atkm.jpg
Standard Bearer von Dittfurth Regt, Hessian Jaeger, Officer Prinz Carl Regt.,Grendier von Mirbach Regt., Fusilier von Lossberg Regt., & Musketeer von Trumbach Regt.

hess_f.jpg
Hessen-Kassel Fusilier Regiment 'v.Knyphausen '

hess_m.jpg
Hessen-Kassel Musketeer Unit ' Erbprinz '

Hope that helps???

John

They can be, as John has described above. An additional detail to consider is that the Hessian grenadier cap plates are distinctly, and in this scale, visibly different from the Prussian cap plates. The Hessian grenadier caps generally had a variation of the rampant Hessian lion as the central motif stamped into the plates. The lion was banded with horizontal bands, which I believe were colored in some cases (red and white bands, on a blue background). Other makers, like Imrie-Risley and Stadden/Tradition depict these differences in their castings.

Another detail to consider is that the various Hessian regiments deployed to America wound up replacing their breeches and gaiters with overalls made of ticking cloth. King & Country chose to depict their Hessians with overalls. If you want to depict your Hessians in that uniform, you'll need to modify the legs on the Jenkins figures.

I have a question, though--why would you want to do this, given the price of the Jenkins figures? It seems to me almost like using a Russian figure for a kit-bash to make a different subject.

Prost!
Brad
