Heid,

This is my favorite first hand account of WWII. GMF is (along with Kipling) my favorite author, and the characters from this true story (The Duke, Nixon, Grandarse, etc.) are right up there with my favorite fictional characters, Kiplings "Soldiers Three" and GMF's Dand McNeil, MacAuslan, Captain Errol, Wee Wullie, Daft Bob Brown, Sgt. Major MacDonald, Lt. Colonel H.E. Lee (all of whom are not so fictional after all).:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Louis,
I don't know what edition you have, but mine has an epilogue where GMF provides the true names of the characters in the book - some of whom didn't survive the Burma campaign. It's a very moving first hand account of what I feel has become a forgotten conflict.
As you say, the characters in the MacAuslan books are not so fictional. I identified some of them during my all too brief spell in the A&S Highlanders - a territorial unit equivalent to your National Guard. I sometimes look back and regret not signing on for longer, but in your very early twenties - there's other distractions.

He has a good book called the Hollywood History of the World Goes through all the great historical epics saying what was right about them. Seems some were quite accurate.
It pre-dates SPR and Band of Brothers, but it has Zulu and Waterloo in it.

Its one of his books I still have to get Damian. I'm aware of it of course. I understand some of the anecdotes are quite hilareous - and very insightfull.

Another good book by GMF is "The Light's on at Signpost" which I believe was his last work. He combines personal reminisence with his own thoughts about current life. Very non PC but he makes more sense than most politicians, social workers and general do gooders. You tend to lose count of the number of times you say "He's right". Very enjoyable read.

Its a brilliant book Trooper. I read it last year - then read it again right away. Full of common sense observations, including a reference to Billy Connolly that I happen to agree with wholeheartedly. Especially after his disgraceful on-stage comments a few years ago referring to a British kidnap victim who was subsequently murdered.

I tried to respond to your post last night (my time) Trooper, but my reply obviously got lost in Cyber-Space along with a whole bunch of photos I tried to post in the East of India section....
:confused::confused:
....Must remember to get Missus H to remonstrate with the folks who run the Chinese server I use.
Anyway, here’s a couple of quick scans of my copy for anyone browsing through bookstores looking for it.
