I have seen that many people have posted that there is alot of room trading proceeding the show (Thurs, Fri, Sat). As I have already posted I will not be staying at the hotel but I would like to partake in this event. Do I just walk into the hotel grab a map and search out these dealers or do you check in at the front desk and tell them what your there for. Is there a certain time frame? Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm a newbie at this.

Hi Sahara,

No, your question is not stupid. We all had to learn how the room trading functions. You need not check at the front desk. Simply proceed to the fourth and fifth floors and began your shopping. The vendors are located on these floors and their open doors are invitations to enter and browse the items they have for sale. However, I strongly recommend you bring some money with you as you will not believe all the wonderful things you will find for sale!

Have a great time at the show!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

When on Thursday are you getting there? I won't get in to the hotel until Thursday evening so I hope you will leave a few items for me to buy.:D:D

For the newbie - a suggestion from my friend GK5717; take a note pad and a pen. The hotel is laid out kind of "funny" and you can loose a room easily. You may want to make notes like "K&C is in RmXXX", or "Marx plastics at good price in RmXXX".

Further - unless you are highly disciplined or very rich make a "want list" before you go. It's so easy to get distracted and overwhelmed that you will walk right out of a vendor's room without getting that item you came for and kick yourself later.

I'm actually in Chicago all week visiting family. I was planning on hitting the hotel either Friday or Saturday for some room trading and attending the show on Sunday.

I developed a list of the things I want but after hearing everyone warn of the temptations I'm getting a little concerned. I really hope I don't blow all my money in the 1st day. I guess I should set out with a specific amount in my wallet each day and leave the plastic at home.

Hi Sahara,

Yes, if you are concerned about making certain you stay within your budget, your plan is a good one. The temptations can be incredibly overwhelming!

Do not worry about missing a desired item because you have already spent the day's allocation. You will succeed in finding very desirable items each day of the show.

Also, do not overlook the opportunity of meeting new friends and visiting with existing friends. Most of all, enjoy the show and the experience. Attending the show for the first time is an event you will always remember!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Like Pat says, try to enjoy the experience and not worry about your budget. Just going from room to room to see what people have even if the items don't interest you is a great experience to see the variety the hobby offers.

The best plan is go to the Ed Borris room, buy all his stuff so he can party all weekend.

The problem with that idea is you might find something you have been searching for for many years and just spent your budget for the day.:D

Which is right next door to the Minutemen Toy Soldier rooms, so you'll be broke by the time you leave our area of the hotel:p................

The great thing about George is that he usually opens on Wednesday afternoon, giving me a chance to clean him out.:D

With all this room trading before hand is it even worth while to go to the show? Will there be anything left :D

As mentioned by Pat on the thread with Chicago Show Advice, there are dealers that only show up at the show, so there are still great discoveries on Sunday. In addition, I have found that no matter how careful I am in checking all the rooms, there is always something that I missed in a dealer's room but later see on his or her table.

Here is my last post on advice for attending OTSN. Try getting there Thursday, the atmosphere is a little more laid back and dealers such as Andy have more time for one on one chat. Plus you get first crack at the rarer or short supply pieces.
This is a MUST, attend both dinners on Friday, Figarti & K&C.
Saturday seems the busiest day for room tradeing, however around 5 or 6 PM most dealers are closeing their doors in preperation for moving downstairs for the show on Sunday. To this day this amazes me more than anything how the dealers must pack everything up then move it downstairs to the show room, then unpack and set up again.
As for the show itself, first timers should plan on attending, but I usually don,t even have enouigh money left to pay the admission charge! And thru the years I rarelly found anything new at the show itself. I don,t think I've been the last 9 years or so.
I think about the only thing that would keep me from attending OTSN is MY funeral!

I really like your plan; I open the rooms at noon, Steven comes by and I am sold out by 12:01, outstanding................

I'll probably make my 1st visit to the hotel on Friday after the Figarti lunch. Your room is one of the 1st ones I plan on visiting so I'll see ya soon.
