Gentle Friends,

Yesterday, I had the good fortune of stumbling over a set of Britains that I had never before seen. I was visiting an antique mall in a nearby city and I spotted this set which I quickly purchased. However, I am at a bit of a loss to know exactly what I have. Perhaps you can help me.

The set is contained in a square, green box. Affixed to the top of the box is a label that reads, "Operation Overlord. The D-Day Landings. W. Britain. June 6th, 1944." On the underside of the box there is a label which reads: "8831." I am assuming that the number 8831 is the set number, but I cannot be sure of that. Also attached to the underside of the box is the original price tag: $135.00.

Inside the box are ten figures. The figures represent various allied forces (army, navy, marines). Also, inside the box are five small metallic representations of 1) a bomber, 2) parachutes, 3) a tank, 4) a DWK, and 5) a battleship. Further, inside the box is a map depicting the 5 D-Day beaches and a brief explanation of the planning, location, logistics, defense, air power, airborne operations, and naval gunfire support involved with D-Day. The box itself appears to be commerative in nature.

I have checked my O'Brien's guide and I do not find this set, though I might have easily overlooked it. Since the set was apparently manufactured during 1994, I do not find it in my copy of Opie's The Great Book of Britains. Can anyone supply me with further information regarding this set? Any information would prove very helpful to me.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Sorry I don't have any info for you on that D-day set you found. :( However, I did want to congratulate you on discovering it. :) It sounds great and I wish you could post a picture of it if you have that capability. I'm sure there are others besides myself who would like to see it.

Thanks, too, for trying to keep the postings on the Britians side of the forum going. I am solely Britians in my collecting and look forward to reading anything "Britians" when I log on throughout each day to this website.

I am sure it won't be long before someone can fill you in on the details of your D-Day set.

Hi Pat
That set number is correct,it was realised as a 50 th anniversary set by
britains, you see it on e bay fairly regularly and that would probably be the
cheapest place to get it as it doesnt fetch very high prices [usualy well under $100] I think they also realised 2 figure companion sets also .

Rob,

Thanks for the information. I paid $50.00 for the set, so I hope it was a good buy in light of the prices the set brings on e-bay.

You mentioned 2 figure companion sets. Can you describe those sets for me? I am interested in knowing more about them.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Mark,

I, too, wish more people would post to the Britains side of the forum. I collect figures from a number of manufacturers (including King and Country), and I would like to see more postings from persons whose collections reflect a diversity of collecting interests.

At any rate, I still have a couple of questions concerning Britains that I will post in the next couple of days. Any help you can provide me with my questions will be greatly appreciated!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Pat

I will see what i can find,i recall seeing the 2 figure sets on e bay,
I used to have all the catalogues but sold them aswell as most of
my britains when i moved into collecting imperial and K and C
[still have some premier and old lead sets]as well as opies excellent Great book of britains .

Regards Rob

I remember this set on some web site that I was visiting a few years ago. I can't remember if it was diecastdirect.com or some other site. But, I believe that in addition to the D-day set there was one or more other commerative sets. I don't remember their names. Perhaps you should google it and spend some time searching the net, unless I am stating the obvious.

Rob,

Thanks for your help! I will look forward to learning anything you can provide.

Isn't Opie's book special? The photographs of the various sets have really helped me identify many of the Britain sets. I wish I could keep my copy in mint condition and I try to do so, but every so often I must take it off the shelf and use it. I guess that was why it was published in the first place.

Pat

I couldnt agree more about the Great Book of Britains,I cant imagine
their are very many books that cover a manufacturer so well, although
britains now makes up only a small portion of my collecting,
I feel the book is a great look into the history of toy soldiers
in general.
The apendices at the back are also very usefull for identifying sets
and their rarity.[not too mention all the photos ]

regards Rob

Pat: I have one of the other D-Day boxes. Set8859-Airborne Forces. This set is only two figures. A red Devil walking with bren gun and an American walking with rifled slung over shoulder. I paid $25.00 for this set. 1994. I see these sets often at shows. John- Forty dollars sounds like a good price. John

Hi Guys,

In keeping with the theme of Operation Overlord. The folks at Britains released a series of sets for the 60th Anniversary which were from Sword Beach for the British Troops Sets numbered 40400 thru 40407. The all fit together to form a small display.

These figures were originally released only through the Collector's Club, but Britains made them available to some of us dealers. You can see them at http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/collectorsclub.shtml - they are still available through us.
