Deepest respects go out to Bill Pertwee who passed away yesterday. His portrayal of the officious Warden Hodges was a huge part in making Dads Army a legend in tv comedy. His abrasive relationship with Mainwaring , who looked down on his common nature, was superb. Mainwaring's line in an early ep set the scene
' You don't mean to say they've made him chief Warden.....the man's a greengrocer ' !
Hodges would often refer to Mainwaring as Napoleon , mocking his military aspirations.
It was a brilliant comedic portrayal of what was in reality a vital and very dangerous job indeed.
R.I.P Bill and thanks for the laughs.
