Forum member Mark Farrell passed away in May. Mark, as LALO, joined the Forum in January 2007. I never met him in person, but corresponded with him for about 10 years after he had contacted me regarding Hiriart toy soldiers after seeing my posts on the Forum. A couple of years ago, he informed me that he was having some serious health issues and would have to cut back on his future orders. When I realized that I had not heard from him this year, I did a Google search of the obituaries in the local Williamsburg, Virginia newspaper and unfortunately found his obituary.

The obituary did not mention his age of his birth date, but did refer to his life long passion for toy soldiers which could be found all over his house and sometimes on the dinning room table. That brought a smile to my face. It also mentioned that he was a very good Trivial Pursuit game player who never lost a game. I wish I would have had a chance to have met him in person.

I thought I would include some photos of the double Hiriart sets he purchased starting with the last one he ordered: Set 1222 2nd REGIMENT ETRANGERE PARACHUTISTES. He also order an add-on set with seven extra men bring the total ordered to 25 figures. He was very precise in what he wanted in this set regarding the number of NCOs, the way the flag bearer carried the flag, how the fanion should be, etc.

Here are four more Hiriart double sets that he ordered for his collection which kind of gives you a feel for what he liked, at least with respect to Hiriart:

1037 CCCP HONOR GUARD

1329 ESCUELA POLITECNICA GUATEMALA

1007 CORACEROS DEL PERU (President's Body Guard)

1135 GRANADEROS DE SAN MARTIN ARGENTINA

He clearly collected Latin American sets including bands and in the past few years, preferred double sets with 18 figures.

Always a sad time when someone we knew, someone we loved passes a way.
But since he made an impression on people in this forum (and elsewhere I am sure) ... a life well lived!
