At the period you speak of no uniforms were worn. Rangers wore their normal work clothes when called out and carried their own arms. To the best of my knowledge no forts were built.

Further to my last post some information on various ranger units.
The Arizona Territorial Rangers raised 1860 disbanded 1862.
1st Company Arizona Rangers raised Aril 1882 disbanded May 1882.
Arizona Rangers raised 1901 disbanded 1909 reformed 1957.

New Mexico Mounted Police raised 1905
California State Rangers raised May 1853 disbanded August !853.
Jefferson Rangers raised 1859 renamed 1861 as
Colorado Mounted Rangers 1861 to date.

No uniforms prior to 1900 apart from badge. No forts.

Nevada joined the Union in 1864, with its final southern boundry established in 1866. New Mexico and Arizona remained "territories" until 1912. Roughly an area was a "territory" prior to its admission to the union as a "state". A territory had many government functions provided by, or administered by the federal government. So the US Army would have provided defense functions in the state. Most "ranger" organizations over the western US were loosely organized for law enforcement or for defense against the Native Americans. The Texas Rangers have a long history that started as a military defense organization that evolved into law enforcement. Most other "ranger" groups in the west were raised to deal with one threat or issue and disolved again. Most didn't have uniforms and many didn't have badges or other insignia.
