Lieutenant Andrew McDermont
Commander of 3rd Platoon
A Company
2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment

Lt. McDermont was killed in the house, indicated on the map. On Tuesday September 19th the Germans attacked and took that particular house. Attacking from under the bridge, Lt. McDermont led his platoon and men of the H.Q. company across the garden into the back door of the house.
He and his batman, Pte. Archie McAuslan just behind him, ran through the house and up the main staircase, where the Germans were known to be. As they were halfway up the staircase, German soldiers appeared above and fired machine pistols directly into their faces. The three Germans jumped over the fallen men and out of the front door. Pte. George Stubbs fired twice with his .45 and missed them. However covering fire from nearby British felled the Germans as they emerged from the house. The two stricken men were placed in easy chairs in the house, and later taken to battalion medical care (see Sergeant Rob Jones interview). Both died that night.
George Stubbs and Archie McAuslan were great pals. The evening before, the two were talking about their situation. Archie said that he wished he was back in the Black Bear in Nottingham, but did not think he would make it. After the war, George Stubbs went to the pub and had two pints, one for him and one for Archie.
