At an event in Halifax NS today , Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced the Maritime Command and Air Command will again be known as the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force — names that haven't been used in more than three decades. The army, formally known as the Land Force Command, will be renamed the Canadian Army.

Quiz : Similarily with other Commonwealth countries , why doesn't the Army have the "Royal " designation ?

It stems from long traditions. British Army Regiments were mainly independent regiments raised by Dukes and Barons and the raising of these units was paid for by Parliament. These Regiments served Parliament - not the monarch. The monarch had a very small personal army, guards and some artillery.

The Navy was a Royal Navy owned by the monarch and was commanded by the monarch's Captains and Admirals. Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps were merged after WW1 and became the Royal Air Force adopting the naval tradition.

You are correct, Terry ,
I think the revived names for the 3 branches of the Canadian Armed Forces was long overdue

4th Hussar

In 1968 the Army , Navy and Air Force were "integrated" by Trudeau's Liberal government as the Canadian Armed Forces for operational efficiency purposes . The new CAF wore one uniform (bottle green ) . The traditional uniforms were restored to each branch in 1985 .

As I vaguely recall , the liberal govt also scrapped most defense contracts and downsized the CAF
