I have a rather pleasant little project in hand with one of my latest purchases from replicametalsoldiers.co.uk.

I asked Andrew for a set of 5 mounted Old Britains replicas of the old number 47 set. As usual, I put them on stands first - because I like them that way and they stand up much better. I wanted an Officer, Trumpeter and 3 Lancers, so Andrew sent me the castings and appropriate arms with weapons/ trumpet.

The Officer will carry a drawn sword - whilst the trumpeter has his instrument in hand. The lancers will carry a lance in right hand. As the castings are all the same - and were cast with an empty sword scabbard to the left side of the horse - and a scabbarded carbine to the right side of the horse. Which leaves several problems, that Britains never corrected.

The Officer would not normally carry a scabbarded carbine - so I removed mine by surgery. As he will be carrying a sword unsheathed in his right hand - he is okay with the empty scabbard.

The other four Sowars required the empty scabbard to have a sword in it - so I replaced the sword hilt in the scabbard by modifying a spare part. These hilts were glued and pinned into a drilled hole just above the top of the empty scabbard.

With these alterations made - I can now commence with painting up my new Skinners Horse contingent. The Officer will ride a Black horse, The Trumpeter will be on a grey, whilst my lancers will ride shades of brown horses

You can probably make out my alterations in the pics attached below. jb

I have now painted up (Humbrol Gloss), my Replica Skinners Horse soldiers. I chose to make them up as a set of 5, composed of an Officer, Trumpeter and 3 Lancers.

As can be seen - the basic figure is the same for all - so requires some "tweaking" to obtain all of the figures I want, depending on weapons carried. The most obvious addition is the missing sword hilt - as the basic casting comes with an empty sword scabbard. Slight modifications were also made to dress - as the Officer's cumerband is different to the others.

Here's a couple of pics of how they came out;

The Skinners came out beautifully. Really an impressive job. The Skinners are my favorite Indian cavalry regiment. I have examples from Somerset, Britains, KC, Regal (SotW), and I love them all. -- Al

Cheers Al - glad you like them too. I think they are my favourite Indian Regiment as well.

These are from Replica Model Soldiers - and are of course based on the Old Britains hollowcast versions - which date from as far back as 1896. jb

This is a pretty set, too, John! Well done!

Prost!

Cheers Brad - glad you like 'em. I had been looking around for quite a while for an original set to repair/restore, without much success at all. So I asked Andrew - (replicamodelsoldiers.co.uk) to make me up a set of 5 castings - and this is the result - a set I have wanted for absolutely ages! jb
