Recently acquired K&C Waffen-SS Series Set WS122 (‘Advancing on the Enemy’). Being predominately a British Airborne collector (Arnhem ’44 and Market Garden Series), I’m not very familiar with the complex rank insignia structure of the Waffen-SS. I do have Vol I of Bender and Taylor’s excellent reference. Tentatively I have identified the figures as a SS-Standartenoberjunker, SS-Strummann and SS-Schutze Panzer-Grenadiers of the 9th SS Panzer Division ‘Hohenstaufen’ . Could someone in the forum please confirm or correct my identification of these figures. Thank you very much in advance.

Jim,

The one with a pistol is a SS-Hauptscharfuhrer (two diamonds on collar with one line and two diamonds on shoulder tabs. The left sleeve insignia of two "V"s is that of a SS-Rotenfuhrer though? SS-Hauptscharfuhrer should have "4 horizontal lines on his sleeve), The rifle man indeed is a SS-Sturmann, and the MP40 is SS-Scharfuhrer (One diamond on collar with one line and no diamonds on Shoulder tab). However, I think there maybe an error on the SS-Scharfuhrer becuase the edging on the shoulder tab should go all the way around the tab. On the figure with the MP-40 it looks like the tab is open on the far ends. The open ended shoulder tab without a diamond belongs to a SS-Unterscharfuhrer, not the Scharfuhrer. This is all according to Osprey Waffen-SS rank chart.
