Yo Shannon, putting in a request for Old Britains to have their own space under manufacture's. Dont mean any disrepect for Britains of today, but to be quite honest I cannot relate to them when trying to discuss old Britains. Britains today are of name only, Old Britains was going for over 100 years before the name was bought out, the two are like Chalk & Cheese as they say just dont mix. I know a few members feel the same, that they should be seperated, as I have just stated dont mean any disrepect for Britains of today, just something I feel strongly about. can you let em know what you think.
Bernard.

Having been a collector of vintage Britains for many years, I wouldn't mind a separate site as mentioned.

Ditto on that, or at least a Vintage (pre-70's) section for all the greats. Speaking of that, how about another that focuses on the 70's to the 90's, like the old Blenheim ,Caberfeigh ,Under Two Flags, Nostalgia,Tradition , ETC... Mike

Hello All,
I am new to this hobby, but because of marriage, live in the thick of it all. Being new, people tend to want to introduce me to their W.Britains, which seems to be as varied as those sharing their love of this hobby. Britains is a very old toy soldier company, the oldest. It has changed forms, missions, ideas, hands and countries through its many years. The Britains family was making toys back in the mid-19th century and changed to toy soldiers in the 1890's. If there is any one thing that W.Britains should be known for it seems it should be is it's constant change and adaption to market needs. The company started out as a cottage industry, each item hand painted at kitchen tables. Then, because of market needs, production moved offshore, new styles were introduced, new materials became popular. Then the company changed hands, changed countries, changed sculpters, changed styles. Each is a defining moment for the company and the collector. Part of the long reaching legacy of this company is that every collector feels personally attached to it. For some people W.Britains is W.Britains, period. For others, their interest in the company ends when the Britains family sent production to China, for others, when Yanks took stewardship. For some, hopefully most, it is all one and the same, a continous line, a long giant parade through the centuries (as it had it's roots in the 19th, and is still thriving in the 21st). I personally think it is this long history, this many generational involvement (to think that Doughboys, GI's, UN forces and todays brave soldiers all have grown up playing with W.Britains- that is pretty unique) is the real mark of W.Britains. I would hate to classify any collectors love of W.Britains as being more or less worthy of the name. It seems so very short sighted for such a longstanding tradition. Besides, their is already a section for vintage figures that a number of Britains collecters already post at. Thank you for listening to the ramblings of a newbie.
All the Best,
Ericka

I must respectfully agree. although I collect both pre and post 70 troops the "old toy soldiers" are a different type of soldier

Yo Trooperess, God Bless us girl your a real charmer (have you kissed our Blarney Stone).
Serious though I can make sense of what you are saying, its not the China thing or the New Britains thing, or the Yanks ownership thing. To explain very fond of the Chinese people, and the set that gets most comments from visitors in my collection is Britains yes Britains lol set 41150 Pipes & Drums Of The Royal Scots, made in China, its a real stunning set. The best looking Cavalry piece is definatly your New Capt Nolan another great piece, a pity it was larger than the normal Britains size horses. Now for the Yanks ownership OK you guys did throw us out, but you missed out never got the chance to show you how to play Cricket & Soccer lol and Heid would add how to be a hooligan, serious just love you guys over there, been twice and if it was nearer would go a lot more, just look at my friendship list mostly Yanks. Now I am always honest even if I have done something stupid, never gave it a thought to put post up in the Vintage section, maybe it was because of the name BRITAINS, so to save our Shannon any more work as they say "That will do for me" and Shannon would proberly forget anyway "She didn't know she was absent minded" lol, good to get away to a new section, I am having Nightmares about the Zulu War lol.
Bernard.

Sorry, fellow Anglophones and -philes, I must respectfully note the correction that Britains isn't the oldest toy soldier company, that honor belongs to CBG-Mignot.

Prost!
Brad
