Am looking to collect the FL Roman Camp Life sets, but which colour tunic? Red or While?

Which do you or would you collect? And Why?

Plus what is your opinion on why there are these two different tunic colours?

I picked up the white Tunic. I believe FL went with the 2 colors because the different legions have different color tunics. Honestly either one looks good. I chose 1 to focus on.

That's one of the unanswerable questions of the archeological scholars. There 's a book , beautifully illustrated by Graham Sumner on this subject (or at least on all the military dress of the roman army). Here you can find it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Mili...06078842&sr=8-1&keywords=roman+military+dress
My opinion after reading the chapter on the color of the tunic is that the red tunic was the "Mars' colour" and so used in battle, tostrike fear, for absorbing the blood and other reasons...the white tunic (and other colours ) was mainly used in camp. I have the roman figure with the "furca", that is carryng all his equipment in white tunic, but i plan to buy the figures polishing the helm and sharpening the sword in red.

I built a table over the labor day weekend to do a diorama of the Roman port of Mogontiacum (Mainz Germany). The 1st Adiutrix was stationed there. FL's 1st Adiutrix is shown wearing White so I will get the white figures for that particular diorama. I have Legio I Minerva on the Roman War Galley so I will probably snag one or two of the Red tunics for the ship.

I have also read that we assume a post industrial revolution version of standardization which Rome did not have. Their standard equipment came from cottage industries and we should see a level of variation, especially for Legions moving from hotspot to hotspot. So, I would not be afraid to mix tunic colors.

Also red was an expensive colour...obviously like in the British Army of the 1600 to 1900 there was an cheap version of dye and an expensive one for the high class. I presume the wealthy soldiers could afford a red tunic , for the others white, natural or other colors sufficed. The ideal as painted on walls in Pompeii was red..but i think everyone had a tunic of a colour different from the other...not white, mainly natural color of wool or linen. If i was FL i'd choose to do a third version off-white representing the colour of the fabric not dyed.

I concur. Also the common red closer to brown and the upscale red more vibrant.
