I am going to do some reading on these two periods. I wanted some referrals of some great books on these subjects. So what have you guys read that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance.

So, no one here has read a book they would recommend on the Roman Legions? Or on the fall of the Alamo?

One of the best recent books on the Roman Army is fittingly enough titled "The Complete Rome Army" by Adrian Goldsworthy, 2003. It is very thorough and has lots of pics, and the text flows well. What I like about this title is it is honest and tells you what the archaeological basis is for most of our modern assumptions about the Roman army, and sometimes admits all we have to work with is our best guess.

There was around 1000 years covering Rome from the 500-year-old Roman Republic and about the same duration of the Roman Empire which succeeded it. There must be hundreds of books that have been written about Roman Legions, are you looking for historical facts, uniforms, organisation or more of a general read, novels etc?

Jeff, I am looking more at historical facts and campaigns.

I saw a program the other day on TV where is discussed the Roman 6th Legion was stationed near Jerusalem. When the Jewish revolt took place, it said that the Roman 10th Legion assaulted Masada. It made no mention of the 6th Legion. Are any of you familiar with this time period in Roman history?

Funny enough I have have been to Masada back in the 80's, what a hot and barren place is an understatement, but I do belive that you are right about the Tenth Legion from what I remember.

It was the tenth- given that it was Masada

Here is a subforum with a laundry list of great Roman books to review:

http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewforum.php?f=39&sid=9a776a5c256a42b16a517cf4a4c3be5b

There are several other gems there as well.

Here is another excellent website that gives superior Roman information:

http://www.roman-empire.net/

he has a book review section as well that you can use. It can be found in the bottom at the drop down menu.

http://www.roman-empire.net/diverse/book-review.html

though most of those books are OOP or hard to find.
