Roman Scorpions (2 Viewers)

Looks a lot like the First Legion version. Not exactly the same, but close.

Hi Bradley

Other than it's the same type of weapon, I certainly wouldn't of said so. The FL is nicer looking and no doubt more detailed and I suspect would be better quality, but I'm not suggesting it is the same quality or as detailed.
For what they are offering them, I think it is good value for money.

If you look at what archaeological pieces of them survive and modern reconstructions based on those finds you see many different variations on a theme.

The FL one has two crew members which is better, compared to the CH one, but the CH one would cost me the equivalent of $68. Where as if were to purchase the FL one, it would be in the UK the equivalent of $239 at todays exchange rate. Importing from the US buying from Treefrog Treasures as an example would save me about $10

Also the style fits better with my TG Romans, than it would with FL ones

So on the whole as I said, it looks good for the price !

Thanks for the heads up Steve. Looks far better than the TCS version for half the price.

I took a chance and ordered one. If I am making a diorama and need several this could be the economical answer. I will report back on the quality and value.

Likewise as I've ordered two myself !

From the photos they look to be much the same construction and materials used and to me, value for money as is the Larger boulder throwing Ballista that they released before Christmas. Which yes could of been much better of course, but since it's the only one on the market apart from the expensive Russian ones and you usually get what you pay for quality wise. At some stage in the future I expect TG and K&C will release their own examples, but in the meantime

Hi Mike.
Yes that's the stone throwing ballista, one of which I bought before xmas as have other forum members.
With your excellent model building skills I'm sure you could produce your own working ones !{sm4}

Steve...
I can't touch that...

I built a stinger about 5 years ago...
compared the the one in the link...
mine was pretty crappy...

I think this is a very good buy...
good price...good scale...
very nice...

K&C released a Medieval Ballista a few years ago and it was very strange!!! You can find them on eBay by searching for catapults. The best Ballista done to date was made by Elastolin in the 1960s, they also turn up on eBay. I featured one in my Siege of Aquileia diorama posted on this forum. Conte made a very realistic Ballista. The catapults made to date are Medieval types that used a cup rather than a sling to hold the projectile. The Roman version had much greater range. NIena Studios has a nice Scorpion and 4 man crew on eBay too.

Y-Weido only has 3 Scorpions left in stock after I purchased one. The Country Honor Scorpion is identical to the First Legion Scorpion in design! The figure and basket of bolts are well done and are also sold as a separate item. The figure is also very similar to First Legion Romans in style.

Makes one wonder if the manufacturer of the Country Honor pieces is also the manufacturer of First Legion pieces and the Country Honor versions are factory seconds or production overruns?

I would say the figure is more in the style of the TG ones myself, though not so well executed. But pretty good all the same and excellent value.

The Scorpion has the front plate inscribed for the IIII Macedonica Legion, does the FL one have this as I can't see it on their own illustration ?

Steve

My Scorpions arrived today. They have a quite impressive appearance and appear well made and painted.
Where as the Ballista stone thrower was mostly plastic /resin with a few metal parts, these Scorpions are mostly metal, a couple of pieces are resin I think.

Only thing a bit disappointing, is that the elevation is fixed unlike the Ballista. There are no moving parts. I don't know if the FL one does have moving parts, so perhaps someone can tell me ?

Crewman, not a very imaginative pose but serves it's purpose and TG size.

Accessory is the basket of arrows. The basket is separate to the two bunches arrows supplied and all metal.

All in all good value for money I'd say.
Hopefully at some stage CH will offer more crewmen.

I wonder where they will be going next. Be great if they offer more Roman War machines such as an Assault Tower and Battering Ram !

Steve,

Can you post some photos when you have a chance. Thanks.

Sure can Brad !

Since I don't have a FL one for comparison, I've put it alongside Del Prado version !

Also I've put some different manufacturers Romans next to each other for size comparison as well. LofJ K&C, TG, Del Prado , KP, FL and Country Honor.

The Y-Weido site on eBay has excellent photos of the Country Honor Scorpion and Roman figures.
Y-Weido communicates very well in English and ships very quickly. He answers questions promptly and is very reliable. I have purchased several pieces from him; including a unique unreleased 2015 King Tiger by TCS. The Eagle Design armor he sells are of excellent quality.

Thanks Steve. Looks very nice. May have to think about it.

Very useful size comparison photo Steve. Amazing how close the Roman figures are in size compared with WWII figures; which can range from 58 to 68 mm.

I received my Country Honor Scorpion today from Y-Weido via USPS. Very well packed in a foam cutout filled box with a photo of the Scorpion on the lid. The Scorpion is 100% Pewter and very well detailed. Historically accurate per parts that have been excavated from archaeological sites and published in books i.e. the Roman Army by Peter Connolly page 67. The Ampurias Scorpion found in Spain and a 1/6 scale drawing is provided. The Country Honor Scorpion model is identical in design to Peter Connolly's drawings of the Ampurias Scorpion; however it is different from the First Legion or Collectors Showcase Scopions, so it is clearly not a copy of either IMO. It is great to see a well researched and accurate Roman Siege Engine offered at such a very fair price

The figure that comes with the Scorpion model is also historically accurate and measures 63mm tall from top of base to top of head. The quality is equivalent to TG Romans and it is size compatible. The figure Scorpion Bolts and Basket can be purchased seperately. I do not believe anyone will be disappointed with this excellent model and figure.
