Would this make sense, or are they both from totaly different timelines????????:confused:

I think this would be a good diorama, with Conte Roman archers firing, and Conte Spartans being hit by them!!!!:D:eek:

Or Spartans attacking a red Roman wall of shields!!!:D

What do you think?????????

Scott, I think such a diorama would look cool, but historically the Spartans we typically think of, warriors, etc., were but shadows of their former famous selves by the time of Rome's conquest of Greece.

I agree with michael, The dioram would look amazing but Rome and Sparta never faced each other in battle. By the time of the roman conquest of greece Sparta was controlled by the macedonians. Now how about this east of india greeks (they have sets with arrows in them) vs. Romans, just a thought

I say go for it!! Nothing wrong with a little alternate history- being a wargamer, I often see 10 or 15mm aztecs or mayans versus the Romans or Spartans.

But yeah, if you are looking for some level of historical accuracy, you are kind of mixing apples and oranges.

The phalanx versus the turtle shield- very interesting outcome there.

That would be great, may not be accurate, who cares. They all fight with bows, spears and swords. Throw in a few Vikings and Normans and Saxons, be creative and have fun. I've been getting ideas of creating some wild new converts, I will be working on them in the coming months. Don't think you have to be historically accurate on this fourm. So set them up any way you like, and have fun. I know I'll enjoy the pics. Mike:)

I always wondered how a British square would hold up to a tank platoon, might just have to see how that looks. I've often day dreamed if a way of time travel could allow Paton's 3rd Army to go back and see what could happen with Rome or Napoleon. But that's just my little pea brain short circuiting again. Oh, yea, by-the-by, short circuiting brain, that's normal for me. I forgot.;)

So do I my friend- no easy cure for a synaptic misfire. :D

I have been "into" the Army since I can remember. When I lived in Germany when my dad was stationed there, it was great- just army stuff all over the place- Patton tanks, 155mm howitzers (3rd Armored country if I remember correctly).

Anyway, I became a rabid fan of "The Haunted Tank" by DC Comics- it was this comic of a Stuart light tank, tank commander who was named Jeb Stuart, the great grandson of the famous Confederate cav general. Anyway, the stories were just fantastic- probably my all time favorite is when they airdropped the Stuart, with the crew inside, and it shot a ME 109 out of the sky that was straffing them!!! :D:D Anyway, at some point in time, I intend on doing a dio of that scene.

STANDS ALONE!!

Ya, I always went to the corner drug store to get the latest copy of the Haunted Tank and Sgt. Rock. My brother was into super heros and the like. I was an Archies and war comic book kind of guy. I had a crush on Veronica.

Oh Yes, the Haunted Tank. Loved it. I liked Russ Heaths artwork over Sam Glanzman but the latter was still great. Remeber the German tank commander that had the ghost of ALaric the Germanic Barbarian following him around?
I had stcks of Haunted Tank and Sgt Rock comics + goldkey battles , all kinds of other ones but cant recall exactly who published them. Our army at war, Marines at war, something like that. Had lots of Korean war stuf as well.
There was another one that had Anzacs fighting in Burma that was a favorite but know nothing about them now.I have no idea whatever happened to them all.

Anyway back to Romans and Greeks. I wouldnt mix the 2 anymore than I would mix FIW and ACW.But thats just me. There are loads of good Romans and Barbarians and the Greeks can battle other Greeks or the Persians.
My 2 bits.
Fub:D

I had a bunch of sgt rock and haunted tank comics also and other WWII comics but my favorite as a kid was sgt. Fury. I loved those comics. Kind of a bit on the childish side now but I loved them at the time.

Oh Man - Did I LOVE Sgt. Rock - I still have Sgt. Rock Comics can you believe it ! :D They are in plastic with the white boards and tucked away - I have no idea what I will do with them - I dont htink they are that valuable - but, I still love them.

Another comic which was very cool - was WERID WAR - remember those?? All kind of crazy stories...different War Periods - those were great too.

On Romans vs. Spartans - its your collection - have fun !! :)

Some one once said that the greatest hypothetical military clash which could ever have happened would have been between Shaka's Impis and the Roman army. Both sides were similarly equiped and it would have been a complete battle of wits and strenght. Why doesn't somebody wargame that Zulus vs Romans
Just a thought

I actually caught the kickoff to one of those fights. Zulus broke through the center line but sustained casualties that probably led to their downfall (I didn't stick it out to see the end).
The Zulu players tried to encircle the two flanks and trap them but they just couldn't hold. I think it was played using WH:ANcients rules.

Hi all,

Glad to see comics (another interest of mine) are getting a mention on the forum. Growing up in the 70's I was a regular reader of DC's war titles, Star Spangled War (with Enemy Ace and Unknown Soldier), Our Army at War (with Sgt Rock), G.I. Combat (with Haunted Tank) amongst others. My favourite title was Weird War Tales a curious mixture of military and the supernatural.

Ron, you might be surprised at how much your comics are worth if they're still in near mint condition. Key comic titles from the 70's have appreciated in value significantly in recent years. Weird War especially is a desirable title amongst comic fans. I picked up a reasonable copy of Weird War #1 (originally published 1971) a few years ago for around $150, but I believe the current value of a copy in near mint is up over $300.

Fortunately DC Comics have been reprinting much of their back catalog and Sgt Rock and Enemy Ace reprints are available as hardcover archive editions. A softcover volume of black and white Haunted Tank reprints was also released last year.

A couple of other great war comics to check out were published by EC Comics in the 50's. EC were better known for their Horror and Science Fiction titles such as Tales From The Crypt and Weird Science etc, but they also released war titles such as Two Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. Great stuff! Original EC comics are quite expensive now, but Gemstone Publishing are in the process of reprinting all of EC's titles in hardcover. You can even pick these up through online sellers like Amazon.

I scored both of those DC reprints- Haunted Tank and Unknown Soldier. Very good though they get a bit repetitive. It is easy to read those stories once a month but when you read them over and over again, the storyline gets repetitive. Still though, absolute classics.

The 'Nam in my opinion is still the best War comic out there- from a "Realism standpoint"- I think it was way ahead of its time and the fact that you can still score copies of that comic in the 3/ $1 bin is just amazing.

Sorry fellas, I just hated Weird War Tales.

Well, the Romans did beat the Macedonian that ruled Greece by the time the Romans got there. You can recreate the Battle of Cynoscephalae (197 BC) and pit your legions against a phalanx. That would be nice, I think. As for the Spartans, their equipament does not look like the one worn by the Macedonians, so you'd better look for other Greeks.
:D
