I had made this piece a few years ago. It was painted and repainted and then I decided to strip off all the paint. Unfortunately the face was damaged during this process and I abandoned the piece. I found it again and decided that I could try to salvage this figure.

I carefully filed and sanded down all the residual gunk and undercoated the trousers lightly in red. I removed the face and decided to sculpt my own, including the ears. The headdress is being added.

The turban was sculpted from putty and added to the fez. I also padded out the shoulders.

I finalised the turban. I also sculpted the face further. The left hand was lengthened and both the shoulders were trimmed down. The vest was improved here and there around the shoulders. Another pistol and dagger was added to the sash. The sword and sling were repositioned on the figure. Following a base undercoat of enamels, the figure is being painted in artist oils, based on an Osprey illustration.

Hi John,

Two delightful models! Looks like I'm also doing the same Mameluke costume.

I did a little more sculpting, adding putty to the underside of the shoulders, building the back of the neck and collar. The tip of the dagger was added, made from some sword scabbard.

Delineated the facial shadows. Added gilt paint to the figure.

I painted the face and outlined the gilt areas on the jacket.

Gilt paint is very hard to control. You take the powder, add a drop of Japan Gold Size solution and the whole thing is one blob. Apply this blob to the area and it just wets the whole area. When the gilt paint has dried, I overpaint with humbrols/oils to delineate the outline.

Been sometime since I worked on this piece. I will be simulating the gilt with yellow ochre instead.

Hi Markster,

thanks. Yes, this piece is on my immediate worktable jostling with other pieces for attention.

Since I am on a roll, I thought I had better use it to complete Roustam. I took the figure out and dusted it off ready for the next round of painting.

I had almost forgotten abt this piece. AnywY picked it up and noticed the sword and sling didn’t look right. After mucking ard a bit, I decided to replace the sword scabbard and with new slings. To attach the scabbard, I filed down the saroual trousers to glue the scabbard. Then carefully attached the slings. The trousers were repainted in a blue undercoat.

Your skill is exceptional. Love the detail work on the scabbard and sling.

Grey Heron
