Today begins the Festival de San Fermin, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, popularized to Western audiences by Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises, one of my favorite books.

The Bulls and aficionados begin their run to through the streets of Pamplona to the bullring.

The fans get some shuteye after no doubt imbibing some serious amounts of vino.

Daredevil runners risk injury as they run through the streets ahead of and with the bulls. The course is covered in around two minutes.

Running with the bulls does bring hazards of being gored, an occupational hazard for the toreros and paramedics are always on hand. Only a few injuries were reported, none life threatening.

Runners charge into the bullring between the bulls. Many are scared but are exhilarated by the experience.

I've always wanted to run with the bulls; must be the Hemingway in me. My wife says don't expect me to take care of you if you get gored.

Jazz,

I never ran with the bulls in Spain. HOWEVER COMMA, I did run with some pretty big cows at the commissary in Yokosuka, Japan affectionately known as "commissary mommas". Adorned in way too tight spandex tights two sizes too small, jelly rolls hanging out on the sides and white t-shirts...bra less. A lovely sight to see when the ships were out.
