I grew up with a lot of those comics, the AWI figures are the first ho/oo scale toy soldiers I ever got, I thought they were the coolest things ever, I still have them in the original cardboard box they were shipped in.
Wow what a loss. He was one of the best WW2 artists in his field. G.I. Combat and Sgt Rock. Both classics. Still have my full collection of those comics. His attention to detail on Armour vehicles was amazing.
I remember a comic where Easy was in the desert and could find the tiger tank. The tiger was hiding under the water in a big ditch with a snorkel. I wonder if that story was from your illustration ExRanger.
Interesting. I’ll take a look. I remember a G.I. Combat issue which I believe Russ did with either a Tiger or Panther coming out of the desert floor. That one was done with a hydraulic platform. A little far fetched story but as a kid I was always overtaken by his artwork. He also did Our Army at War which was prior to going to Sgt. Rock. Joe Kubert was another famous artist for WW 2 comics but Russ was spot on for his attention to detail.
