Looks like they might have used the "games" as cover. It seems old Ivan has his hands full now.

Remember the advice of Jack Ripper in Dr. Stranglove:
Your Commie has no regard for human life, not even of his own. For this reason men, I want to impress upon you the need for extreme watchfulness. The enemy may come individually, or in strength. He may even appear in the form of our own troops. But however we must stop him. We must not allow him to gain entrance to this base. Now, I'm going to give you THREE SIMPLE rules: First, trust NO one, whatever his uniform or rank, unless he is known to you personally; Second, anyone or anything that approaches within 200 yards of the perimeter is to be FIRED UPON; Third, if in doubt, shoot first then ask questions later. I would sooner accept a few casualties through accidents rather losing the entire base and its personnel through carelessness. Any variation of these rules must come from me personally. Any variation on these rules must come from me personally. Now, men, in conclusion, I would like to say that, in the two years it has been my privilege to be your commanding officer, I have always expected the best from you, and you have never given me anything less than that. Today, the nation is counting on us. We're not going to let them down. Good luck to you all.

You just can't ever turn your back on them!

Gen Patton had the right idea.:D

bbc mentioned the largest port hard hit by airstrikes and Blacksea fleet,,quite a bit of action by a "decimated" miltary.

Not to be a naysayer, but this conflict should be watched very carefully. Georgis is a NATO ally and friendly to the US and UK. The Russians have never done anything without careful planning and strategic goals and objectives. Contrary to popular media and political mantras since the collapse of the USSR, IT is NOT our friend. Look where(not you guys, the GP) this is on the map, and expand out to see what this could evolve into. Mike

well said,,unfortunatly a good many buy into the media spin,,a lot of stalin staues in the areas.

Deja vu all over again

The Red Army invasion of Georgia also known as the Soviet-Georgian War (February 15 – March 17, 1921) was a military campaign by the Soviet Russian (RSFSR) Red Army against the Democratic Republic of Georgia (DRG) aimed at overthrowing the local Social-Democratic (Menshevik) government and installing the Bolshevik regime in the country. The conflict was a result of expansionist policy by the Soviets, who aimed at control of the same territories which had been part of Imperial Russia until the turbulent events of World War I, as well as the revolutionary efforts of mostly Russia-based Georgian Bolshevik elite, who did not enjoy sufficient support in their native country to seize power without foreign intervention.
Independence of the DRG had been recognized by Russia in the May 7, 1920 treaty and the invasion of Georgia was not universally agreed upon in Moscow. It was largely engineered by two influential Georgia-born Soviet officials – Joseph Stalin and Grigoriy (Sergo) Ordzhonikidze, who obtained, on February 14, 1921, a consent of the Soviet leader, Vladimir Lenin, to advance into Georgia on the pretext of supporting the "peasants and workers rebellion" in the country. The Soviet forces took the Georgian capital Tbilisi (then known as Tiflis to most non-Georgian speakers) after heavy fighting and declared the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic on February 25, 1921. The rest of the country was overrun within three weeks, but it was not until September 1924 that the Soviet rule was firmly established. Almost simultaneous occupation of a large portion of southwest Georgia by Turkey (February-March 1921) threatened to develop into a crisis between Moscow and Ankara and led to significant territorial concessions by the Soviets to the Turkish National Government in the Treaty of Kars.

If that mk5 was covered in reactive armor it would fit right in,,,My grandfather survived the german army on the russian front until the revolution when the russ, army packed up and went home. Wish I had taped his exploits. He didnt have a very positive opinion of them as military men.

Before you are lulled into trusting the Russians, look at who is running the country and what happens to those who question the leadership. Not much has changed since the Tsar's day, they are brutal, heartless SOBs........................:(:(

We may be witnessing the initial stages of World War III. Putin's real target is the West. Like the Germans after WWI he has been quietly re-building the Russian military as an imperial force. He knows we are bogged down in the Middle East/Northwest Frontier and so is taking advantage of that. It is likely his revenge for Afghanistan. We are in for hard days ahead and a war with many fronts. Think 1939. We are on a very slippery slope at the moment.

hopefully Putin is just trying to rebuild the Russian empire lost when the USSR
crumbled

Randy,
I would dreadfully, unfortunately agree. A bunch of TS collectors with so much aforethought and knowledge and intuition! Would that our self-centered leaders have the same passion for history and strategy(and patriotism towards our own country). Not a good thing, with the war and economy , and election . Think good thoughts and pray. Mike

What the world needs is to realize is that we are all in the same boat and that if we don't work together and cooperate we are going to lose the planet and its inhabitants. If only all those billions of dollars could be used for fixing the planet and its inhabitants rather than destroying them. I am sorry to have sounded a pessimistic note, but 2008 so far has not been an auspicious year with economic, environmental, and military crises dominating the news. My parents lived through the Depression and WWII (eras I have read quite a bit about) and the current situation is not encouraging, As a child growing up in the 1950s I lived in fear that the Russians would bomb us into oblivion. I chillingly remember as a high school senior in the Fall of 1962 how close we came to that point during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This may explain some of the motivation behind the attack:

Georgia, US start military exercises despite tensions with Russia

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Georgian and U.S. troops started a joint military exercise Tuesday amid growing tensions between the ex-Soviet republic and Russia, a Georgian defense ministry official said.

About 1,200 U.S. servicemen and 800 Georgians will train for three weeks at the Vaziani military base near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, ministry spokesman Mindiya Arabuli said. He said the drills were planned months ago and are not related to recent tensions over two separatist Georgian regions that are backed by Moscow.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has courted the United States and sent a large contingent of troops to Iraq. His efforts to move Georgia from under Russia’s shadow and into NATO have angered Moscow, which has stepped up support for the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Also Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry started a military exercise in the nearby North Caucasus region. Ministry spokesman Yuri Ivanov said the drill had “nothing to do” with the Georgian-U.S. maneuvers.

Georgia claims a string of recent explosions and border skirmishes in Abkhazia and South Ossetia are part of a Russian plan to annex the regions, while Russia claims Georgia is gearing up for a mid to take control of the regions by force.

Georgia has also committed to the War in Iraq and currently has the most troops in country after the US and UK. Wonder why we didn't know that months ago? Ah, censorship in the form of subjective medis coverage:cool::mad: Mike

When you start to connect the dots one can see how something like pre-WWI alliances led to war. The US media leave so much to be desired. It's amazing what one can learn listening to global shortwave radio. We Americans are so poorly informed about what is happening around the world. The media provides a very selective filter of what we know not only abroad but domestically as well. It's incredible how much time is devoted to the likes of Hannah Montana, Britney, Paris, and Anna Nicole. This is basically a wasted use of media time, leading to a poorly informed population and electorate.
