Well, gentlemen, here is the first of several announcements and pre-orders that we'll be making over the next few weeks. This time around it is another Russian Hussar regiment, the Soumsky Regiment at Borodino in 1812. The Russian Hussars wore such colorful uniforms that we thought to bring you all several variants of them so that you can raise more than just the one regiment. There are also some slight variations (aside from the obvious different uniforms!) to the figures from the previous Ahktyrsky release, most notably we have a figure with a pistol in this release. These will be shipping mid-July 2009.

Matt, again an excellent choice.

Can you give the uninitiated an idea where this regiment was fighting in Borodino? Was it part of the effort in the North?

And while we are at it, which book on Borodino would you recommend? I am toying with either

THE BATTLE OF BORODINO: Napoleon Against Kutuzov by Alexander Mikaberidze (2007), or

BORODINO: THE MOSCOVA: The Battle for the Redoubts by F. G. Hourtoulle (2001)

.... and I apologize if this has been discussed before.

Thanks Andanna. I actually don't know where exactly the Soumsky Hussars fought at Borodino for sure, I'd have to look it up. I know they were part of the III Cavalry Corps. If I remember correctly, they were part of the counterattack on the Raevsky (Grand) redoubt in the center, but I can't be positive without looking it up. The Akhyrstsky were engaged around the Fleches for sure. Unfortunately I don't have my libarary of reference books with me............sigh.

In regards to recommended reading on the battle, you actually just pointed one out to me that I'm not familiar with in the "The Battle of Borodino" if it was written in 2007. I of course have been living on Mars since 2007 so I barely know who wins the Superbowl much less any new books that come out. The Hourtoulle book is decent. It's not very detailed and is more a study on the uniforms than it is a detailed analysis of the battle, but it's a good primer and is a "pretty" book with lots of uniform plates. It's definitely worth picking up. I would also recommend Nafziger's Napoleon's Invasion of Russia. While it covers the Russian Campaign in it's entirety, it gives detailed coverage to Borodino and the other battles. Of course, it was written by Nafziger so you'll have to struggle through it and take some ephedra or Ripped Fuel before reading it unless you want to nap a bit.

Also, for a GREAT primer that's free, check out...

A fantastic website that if you figure out how to navigate all the way through it and all of it's mirrors, which I haven't yet in years of visiting it, contains just a wealth of information not only on Borodino, but the Napoleonic wars in general. Lots of information on the nationalities, battles, organization, it goes on and on and on.

Hope this helps a bit!

Matt
