Hi All,

Discussions on the Magnificent Seven movie always lead to the inevitable comparison with the iconic Seven Samurai movie by the director Akira Kurosawa. Less is usually mentioned of the main actor Toshiro Mifune, who is probably the greatest Japanese actor of all time. Mifune starred in many films, mostly of the Samurai genre.

I got hold of this Criterion Collection DVD from Amazon and it is an excellent movie, even if it was not directed by the great Kurosawa.

When I was a kid, my mom took me to a ton of Samurai movies. Talk about graphic and bloody. They could kill 4-guys in 3-seconds. I remember one duel where the good guy killed the bad guy, but lost his arm in the process. He expressed no pain and then stoically walks home. Tough guy. Anybody remember Zatoichi, the blind swordsman?

Hi Go for Broke,

I remember seeing one episode of Zatoichi, the blind and one-armed swordsman. Talk about being handicapped! I also saw all the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, but these actors are not as mesmerising as Toshiro Mifune.

I enjoyed Mifune's performance as Toranaga in "Shogun", too. So much so that when I read the novel, I can't help but picture him as the wily daimyo.

Prost!
