Good evening gentlefiends:eek: Just got back from watching Julie and Julia. It was a wonderful movie for me ! So engrossed I was that I did not notice the Paramedics go trooping by to administer to a distressed member of the audience. It was only when they stopped the show and turned on the lights did I realize anything was amiss.;) Problem solved by members of SMFD and on to the show.

Now I have read "My life in France" by Julia Child and Alex Prud'homme. I enjoyed it as well. A wonderful book about being in Postwar Europe and the US. The life of a cultural icon. Indeed her kitchen is in the Smithsonian.

So what is this all about then? It got me to thinking:eek: I know but it did. It got me to thinking about people. The book and the movie are about People. Rightly so our hobby is about people. People who make little people and collect little people. We create little worlds with little people. We recreate events with real people as our influences. Also we associate with people here and at the shows throughout the country! Indeed other countries as well. Our hobby is an international one. I now have friends across the globe! How awesome is that?

For all of my isolationist tendencies I like people. Sometimes it is hard to relate to others except when I talk about my passions. Then watch out! The shows are a big deal for me to meet people that I have talked with on this forum and the phone. I think this hobby has allowed me to get closer to my father. Big plus for me as he is a hard guy to get to know.

I have met some of you here and there and would like to know more of you. It always saddens me that some of you will not go to the shows. The more the merrier says I:) Someone once remarked that on this forum we actually encourage people to add to their collections and even tell them where they can find more! We do not seem to compete a whole lot with our collections a trait that is displayed in an opposite fashion most other places.

I could go on but what do you think????

Any activity that allows you to gain friends and get closer to your father can't be all bad. That's great to hear about these by-products of your hobby. Going to shows like Chicago is about the people, not the product. I love to buy the rare items (if I can find them and, then, afford them) but it's the people. I had the best time last year when I stopped worrying about trying to find the retired items and just enjoyed being with my friends.

Funny :), yesterday I also saw Julie and Julia with wife and kids and we all loved it (my son even noticed that he and his sister were the only kids in the audience and every one was old :)). My wife is a big fan of Julia Child and a great cook. I was born in France where I met my (American) wife and we lived in Paris a few years (like Julia and her husband) before moving to the States.
To me the joy of having any hobby (e.g. cooking, collecting toy soldiers, etc.) is about sharing the same passion with others or educating people about that hobby, hence I agree it's all about having fun and/with people...

I am somewhat of a foodie. I have a hard time getting around mixing sweet and savory together. I love chocolate but tend to enjoy the savory side od life or at least not mixed. One exception would be coconut shrimp! But, once again eating with friends is better than the best meal on earth and eating it alone.:)

Michael you are right on the money my friend! It is a real pleasure speaking

with you and many of the other collectors we interact with. Lots of fun seeing

their collections and hearing their point of view on the hobby!

I look forward to meeting you one day at a show in Chicago or on the

coast!:)

That is why it is so much fun when the Treefroggers UK Platoon meet up at the London shows. We hope to see some of our overseas friends attend in December. You will get a warm welcome.
