Really like the J Jenkins Saxons and Viking, I collect JJ Aztecs, Roman Enemies [like TG Romans], WW1 Aviation and WW2. Not to much into the Norman Conquests etc, but was thinking of getting the Saxons and Vikings to use in a set up representing the earlier period of the Viking raids, expansion and settlements around the 800s, Kingdom of Wessex Mercia and East Anglia, King Alfred etc.

My question is would these JJ figures be comparable? I know it over 100 years in between the periods, but, I am asking the expertise that I know is within the TFrog forum, was there significant differences between those Saxons and Viking that fought in the battles of the 9th century such as the Battle of Edington and the Battle of Hastings? The Fyrd and the Burhs were a network of military defenses establish by Alfred, but was there significant differences in the weaponry etc?

By the way the final book in The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell, War Lord, is out on October 15th 2020. That book and the Harry Sidebottom Roman Fiction book, The Return, that came out on October 1st 2020 together with the next Reacher book released on October 27th 2002 make this a great month for book releases.

John - How about a Viking raid series, along the lines that Conte did many years ago?

It's not worth worrying about and i'm certain if you do your diorama with the abundance of different makers figures available, it will turn out great. The shows that I have watched, the Saxons looked more regimented and possibly more armour. The Vikings are probably more credited with using the shield wall and i've heard that one of the reasons they lost at Stamford Bridge was they were caught by surprise and never had time to put any armour on. Their shield wall eventually gave way from their battle casualities. Here are some of my dioramas of the period. Regards Greg.

Cheers, i have been to Stanford Bridge [went to university quite close] and read a bit about the battle, they were caught unawares and many of the Viking did not have armour. I think you are right and the Saxons were more regimented and had more a uniform quality in arms, shields and weapon.

Nice display. i will probably stand with the three Viking berserkers and then pick up a few Saxons.
