In early 1944 the Soviets attempted to create a smaller version of their success one year earlier at Stalingrad. This time they intended to cut off a salient that protruded from German lines and still touched the Dnieper river. The salient contained two German corps which Hitler refused to withdraw, thus setting the stage for an encirclement. In January, the Soviets sprang their trap and successfully encircled the German forces.

This is known now as the Battle of the Korsun–Cherkassy Pocket

This scene represents a Panther Ausf.A from Schweres-Panzer-Regiment Bäke, a fire brigade which included both Panthers and Tigers, as it attempts to reach the encircled troops.

In the end a bridge was established and some of the German forces did manage to escape.

Too nice, gee that HB stuff is lovely. Robin.

Totally agree and superb scene Frank. The colour pic is awesome but I reckon if a black and white pic was posted, it would look like a real scene from WW2!

Frank,

I love your pics but they always come with a touch of sadness as it reminds me these wonderful vehicles will never be made again.

Oh to have gotten in this hobby just a few years earlier.
