Guys,
I am thinking about doing a repaint job on the K&C KM17 the Sd Kfz 9/1 Recovery Vehicle to AK desert colours but my search through my library of books on the Western Desert cannot produce any evidence that they were there in the Workshop/Recovery units.
Can any one be of assistance.
Cheers Howard

I'm almost certain I've seen them in Tunisia towing Tigers. Don't know about Libya though. Auxiliary vehicles would be last in line to get new camo paint, so it's completely acceptable to leave it grey for a diorama. I'll see what I can come up with tonight

The table of organization from June 1, 1942 indicates the units were certainly authorized to have the vehicle.

KStN 1187 Motorized Tank Maintenance Company, Armored Regiment
1.06.1942

1 x Recovery Platoon which was authorized to have the following:

2 motorcycles with sidecar
1 car (Kfz.1) "kubel"
1 truck crane (Kfz.100) - 3 ton
1 halftrack crane (Sd.Kfz.9/1) - 6 ton
2 halftracks (Sd.Kfz.7)
6 halftracks (Sd.Kfz.9)
2 trailers - 10 ton
4 trailers - 22 ton

Of course this doesn't mean the units actually had the vehicles.

Mark and Frank,
Many thanks for your assistance. I am thinking of putting together a Dio of a Platoon of the 501st Tiger Battalion (two tigers and two Pz IIIs) moving into a rear HQ and maintenance area in Tunisia. The Famo would just add that final touch.
My good mate Obee is currently repainting a WS52 Sd Kfz 6 Half Track and a WS77 Sf Kfz 251 Command Vehicle in AK colours to complete the HQ area.

PS Mark, I am going to call it "Turning Over A New Leaf"^&grin

That's great news. Are you going to use identical Tigers & PzIIIs or 4 different models?

Mark mate,
The platoon (Zug) will be of 2 x AK39 Tunisian Tigers and 2 x AK50 Pz IIIs, all re-numbered (Tigers 121 & 122 and Pz IIIs 123 & 124) and tact signs changed to the 501st Schwere Panzer Battalion. I did think about using different Tigers and PzIIIs but just changing the numbers and tact signs will be the easier way rather than a total repaint of two other AFVs..
When the whole Dio which is 9'6" x 3' is finished I will post photos.
Cheers Howard
