I read this book some time ago at the suggestion of an English friend. As is so often the case for me, I actually began it with quite low expectations (I cannot remember why - perhaps just a vibe!) and found it quite magnificent. I rate it very highly and though a very different kind of novel and without the benefit of Remarque's experience, I think the equal of All Quiet on the Western Front. Interestingly a number of the really great pieces of WW1 literature appeared in the late twenties, almost as though it took ten years for the writers to again find their voice.

If nothing else, it will be good to see a movie that doesn't have a vampire as the leading character.

Hope all is well in Blighty

Hi Jack,

All well here in old blighty and hope its the same in Aus.

Wonderful book isn't it. Really enjoyable. The BBC do put out some great tv adaptations when they put their mind to it so I really hope they do this justice. In the run up to and during the 100th anniversary in two years time I think we WW1 aficionados are in for a wave of docu's,films and dramas from all over the place, and most probably more books than you can shake a piece of barbed wire at!

Fingers crossed they do a good job!

Cheers

Rob

Anyone see the second and final part of this last night? Was outstanding, really good, much better than the first. My god those tunnellers had some stones. The drama was very well done and very moving, both the attack on Thiepval on the 1st July 1916 and the horror and fear of working and fighting underground was recreated superbly by the BBC and they fully deserve the applause they are getting this morning. I do hope the beeb give us more WW1 drama in the run up to 2014.
