Seeking collectors opinions (1 Viewer)

Lot of interesting points here. My opinion is that past wars were clean cut, nation against nation, army against army, battles fought and either won or lost. Modern warfare is not against a nation but rather groups of fighters, patrols, skirmishes, ambush and booby trap weapons. There doesn't seem to be any clear cut objective in mind, no ground to be gained, no army to defeat. There's nothing wrong with the troops, heroes one and all, just a lack of direction. Trooper

I cannot imagine a more succint, well thought out response than this. Bravo to you sir!! {bravo}}

Chris, Gettysburg is the battlefield of battlefields! When I stand on the Union side of Pickett's charge and look down on 1-mile of open field, I get teary eyed imagining the Confederates getting chopped up. I envy you east coast guys with rich history at your doorstep. I've said it before. If I lived on the east coast, I would be a FIW, AWI or ACW collector, not WWII that I am.

Totally agree with this sentiment. I also feel that here is not much variety in modern armor or gear. Whereas the WW2 period had so many variants and unique models to choose from, am Abrams is an Abrams and it looks like just about most any other nation's front line tank...Michael

What?!?!?!? Blasphamy! {sm4}

Michael, I'll have to repectfully disagree. If you look at the wide range of AFVs currently in service with The US and UK forces alone today, there's a whole heap of variety.
Not so much in terms of tanks, I grant you, but armoured transport, bucketloads!
Besides, I'll settle for a slow trickle of modern releases, Bradley, Warrior, Challenger II, WIMK, Humvees etc, etc....
Whatever is chucked out, by whomever, I'll be getting.

Cheers
Simon

I actually disagree, but not for the same reasons as Wraith. Yeah, I think most modern uniforms are boring- though some are quite cool- and most tanks are just plain tan with long things protruding and antennas. But think about the WWII. They were probably all saying the same thing- all those guys remembered when people actually wore some COLOUR in their uniforms. Now think about the ACW. Those guys probably were lamenting about the loss of all those varying uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars- they just wore plain all blue or all grey+ rags. Then in the AWI. All the Brits wore variations on the same theme(s), and Americans wore civies. So, throughpout history, each era looks on the last as someone will one day look on them. Just like those with slaves called their predecessors cruel, then racists called slave owners cruel, we call them racist, and one day we will be thought of as backward discriminating ancient peoples. So welcome to the wheel of history....{sm4}

Hi Guys,

Interesting thread again thanks to a good question from Chris. I think there is a lot of interest in modern armor and vehicles and the uniforms and equipment of the infantry would make a painter go nuts due to the variety and change. We had BDUs in the American Armed Forces for well over 20 years then we had a jump in technology and other factors that has made us change the uniforms several times in the past decade and we are still trying to sort out what right looks like be it ACU green or the current look of ACU which is a brown base camo or my personal favorite "Aquaflage"(Thanks to CC for the great new word{sm4}) which is a blue ACU varient that the Navy is sporting to the semi tigerstripe digi look that the AF is wearing with green boots no less. So there is certainly a ton of variety to suit all of the modern forces needs. I also think there are a lot of varients of the Tanks that could be produced, I personally would enjoy an M1IP which came before the M1A1 rolled out the gate and of course the M1A2 with its varients. There is also the Challenger, LeClerc, Stryker, M2 and M3 Bradleys and of course the list has to include a bunch of old and new Soviet junk like the T55 to the T72. Not going to mention the variety of trucks other than the Buffalo and some of the Engineer and NBC Recce vehicles like the Fox. So there is a ton of stuff that could be done to be sure. Personally i would enjoy having some modern armor but of course the bottomline for the producers of these sets is sales and what would or wouldnt sell. Perhaps if there is a bit more discussion here and at the shows some of the makers out there will decide to give it a go. I guess we can keep our fingers crossed.

Dave
