Can you dull down a semi gloss finished figure by spraying it with dull cote? Will this process make it into a matte finish? Somebody talked about this one time but I couldn't find the thread.

I,ve never done this myself but know that it can be done and I also read on here somewhere of some members doing this.
I had a few guys at shows try and sell me glossy napoleonics which i,m not into and when I told them i,m not into gloss they always give me this spray them with dull coat rap!

Cheers:

I believe the thread was via Ken Olsen in reference to repairs utilizing adhesives followed by something such as or similar to Testor's Dullcoat for an overall matt finish. I hope this helps you out or puts you on the right flight plan!

I think it will work so I may go ahead and buy the figures in question and try it. I will have the wife ready with her camera in case of major melt down or failure. Cost of new soldiers 20.00
Cost of Digital camera 500.00
Having photographic evidence of your husbands screw up PRICELESS!!!!

Yes, it will work. I spray my painted fiures with a matte finish clearcoat . I think it protects better but it does give them a sheen I dont like. A shot of dullcote flattens them back out very well.

Be aware , if it's very hot or humid { probably not a problem in the Winter time but be careful in the Summer!} either one of these , dullcote, krylon, any sealer I have ever used will yield disaster. Gives them a frosty discoloration and will ruin your troops.

Thanks a million Fubar hot and humid is pretty much all the time here except winter. I will have to ponder on how to get around that one. I couldn't remember who talked about it but now that you spoke up it was you because I remember you coat with krylon and then over shoot dullcoat. I appreciate it.

No Problem Shiloh. I just did this all today with a hundred Russians or so. I multibased 4 marching figures{ yep, the metal ones} on steel bases.Did 96 troops this way and based a bunch more on 1 1/4 " steel single bases.
I like doing it this way so I can move big formations around quickly and my arm wontfall off moving hundreds and hundreds of singles around. Also they dont fall over!

Tempted to do this multi basing with more of my horse and musket{ Napoleonics} factory figures. Crazy I know as I will ruin the resale value.I really dont care as they are for my own collections and I dont plan on selling them anyway!

Do we get to see?

Also if there are only a few pieces to dull coat you can always try games workshop clear flat glaze. They have gloss, semip gloss and matte tour choice. Haven't noticed a humidity problem.

Yes, you will get to see.I'm doing them in stages letting stuf dry in between.
I havent tried the GW stuf. I see it's around $8.00 a can. I'm too cheap and lazy as the nearest place that carries any of that is all the way into Portland and not worth the drive for me.The Krylon is always available at less than $4.00. Their Matte finish is best actually very MATTE.

I only had a problem once with the FROSTY coating and it was a very hot and humid day. I actually read the side of the can and by dang if it didnt say do NOT use at temps over 75 or in humid conditions.Son of a gun see what reading the directions can do for you!

I have personally converted glossy to matte with great results, using Krylon Matte Finish Spray #1311 from Walmart (about $3.75 a can).

I've done over 30 metal figures and the can still seems full.

I have also conveted matte to glossy, with great result, using Krylon Clear Glaze Spray #0500, also available at Walmart (same price).

Both of these products work very well and are an exteremly cheap conversion method.

The can states it won't crack, can also be used on plastic and should be applied in a low humidity 50 to 85degree inviroment.

Try it on a cheapie, it worked well for me,

Michael

Don't touch until dried or you will leave a fingerprint.
